Job Description

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office is seeking an Assistant Director of Student Success. Under the direction of the Director of Student Success, the Assistant Director fulfills an integral role in transitioning our first-year students to ASU by managing and developing a variety of courses offered to students in The College, along with various related program initiatives. 

Currently offered courses include LIA101 (required for entering immersion first-year students and taught by over 20 instructors who serve as their students’ academic advisor), ASU101-LA (required for entering online first-year students), the Discovery Seminar series (small, discussion-based courses for first-year immersion students), and the possibility of courses for other target populations. The Assistant Director will be responsible for multiple aspects of the courses including curriculum development, instructor training, and course materials. The role will be responsible for recruiting, selecting and training peer student leaders to assist instructors and students. The Assistant Director will use data and reports to manage aspects of enrollment management, assessment, evaluation, and student outcomes. The Assistant Director will also have a role in other projects within the Student Success team, including the Early Start program and new initiatives.

Salary Range: $58,000 - $64,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

Immersion Course Development, Training, and Instruction (50%):

  • Manage overall development and delivery of first year seminar courses in The College, ensuring classes remain consistent, engaging, and effective throughout the academic year.
  • Update and evolve curriculum as appropriate, including working with offices across ASU to provide content.
  • Assess and evaluate current instructor training and course curriculum, using course and student evaluation data, in order to implement changes and improve student outcomes.
  • Create semester syllabus, course calendar and Canvas master shells as needed.
  • Lead advisory group of instructors to develop curriculum, materials, and instructor training for LIA101 courses.
  • Annually recruit, interview, select, and train approximately 60 student learning assistants for LIA101.
  • Develop and facilitate leadership course (LIA394) for LIA101 learning assistants.
  • Coordinate Discovery Seminar course application and selection process.
  • Communicate with Discovery Seminar faculty to address questions and prepare for teaching assignments.

Online Course Development (25%):

  • Recruit, train, and supervise instructors for ASU101-LA online immersion course.
  • Work in conjunction with the EdPlus team on syllabus and materials for ASU101-LA.
  • Use data reporting and analysis to monitor course demand and adjust as needed.
  • Act as primary instructor in success course sections as needed.

Student Success Initiatives (25%): 

  • Serve on Early Start workgroup, managing program rosters and course enrollment. Early Start is an early arrival program offered to select first-year immersion students in The College.
  • Assist in the development of other courses offered through the Dean’s Office, such as career-related or student success courses.
  • Develop a professional network to inform and improve best practices. 
  • Develop additional curricular experiences for target populations.
  • Assist with other projects and duties assigned to the Student Success Team, including new student onboarding and student success management.
  • As required, represent college/department at college or university-level meetings, collaborate on cross-unit teams or projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in a related field, AND four (4) years experience in one or more of the following: advising, recruitment/retention, other related student services in a college/university environment, which includes two (2) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s degree and 1-3 years of experience in advising, first-year programs or success courses preferred.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate students in the university environment. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, and pedagogical methods that promote student success.
  • Experience in and knowledge of course development best practices.
  • Evidence in being self-motivated and ability to work independently, along with a willingness and ability to take direction and work as part of a team.
  • Experience in applying the principles, techniques and methods of teamwork, compromise and collaboration to produce desired outcomes. 
  • Experience in the use of internet-based research tools and Microsoft Office computer applications. 
  • Experience using student information systems such as PeopleSoft, Handshake, Salesforce, and DARS degree audit. 
  • Experience in using student data to make informed decisions regarding program and process implementation and improvement.
  • Experience in rapidly adapting and effectively utilizing new technology, practices, policies and methods in an environment subject to quickly changing priorities. 
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with peers, faculty, students, administration and other interested parties. 
  • Evidence of effective communication skills, including presentation and training skills. 
  • Experience demonstrating sensitivity to needs of a diverse student population. 

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.

Flexible work option:

  • Hybrid Remote work is available for up to two days a week upon completion of an on-boarding period. Dean or vice president-level approval is required.
