Position description

The Departments of Anthropology and Public Health at Wayne State University invite applications for a Biocultural Anthropologist to be appointed as a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning in August 2023. The hire will be jointly appointed (50/50) in Anthropology and Public Health, with a tenure home in the Department of Anthropology. This search is one of two concurrent hires in the Department of Anthropology. Topical areas of interest may include but are not limited to: biological and health impacts of poverty or racism; global and/or public health; human adaptations among diverse populations; reproductive health, stress, and environment. Geographic area is open.

Qualifications

Applicants should show promise of excellence in scholarship, including the potential for funded research. Teaching responsibilities (2:2) will include graduate level courses in anthropology and undergraduate level courses in public health and anthropology. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research expertise complements those of the faculty in the Departments of Anthropology and Public Health and intersects with topics of broad anthropological significance. The department and college will prioritize candidates whose scholarship and lived experience advances the university’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. A PhD in Anthropology, Public Health, or closely related social science discipline is required by the start of the appointment in August 2023.

The successful candidate will join two vibrant academic units collectively dedicated to addressing inequalities in global and local settings.  Faculty in the Departments of Anthropology and Public Health have achieved national and international reputations for excellence in their respective fields of research, which include global health, gender and reproductive health, food security, inequities among immigrant and diaspora communities, infectious diseases, environmental determinants of health, and life-course studies. Faculty in both departments are committed to  incorporating their international research locally through community-based initiatives and collaborations with vulnerable, underserved, and urban populations, especially in Detroit.
