Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer
Albany, New York

The State University of New York (SUNY) seeks a strategic, visionary, and collaborative leader to serve as Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer (VC/CDO) for the largest comprehensive system of higher education in the United States. Reporting directly to the Chancellor and serving on the Chancellor’s leadership team, the VC/CDO will oversee the operation and management of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The VC/CDO will be responsible for all aspects of promoting and advancing the System’s diversity goals, creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment, and assuring all campuses have resources, training, and support responsive to their unique requirements and consistent with overall SUNY practices and goals.

About SUNY:
The State University of New York is the largest comprehensive system of higher education in the United States, and more than 95 percent of all New Yorkers live within 30 miles of any one of SUNY’s 64 colleges and universities. Across the system, SUNY has four academic health centers, five hospitals, four medical schools, two dental schools, a law school, the state’s only college of optometry, and manages one US Department of Energy National Laboratory. In total, SUNY serves about 1.3 million students amongst its entire portfolio of credit- and non-credit bearing courses and programs, continuing education, and community outreach programs. SUNY oversees nearly a quarter of academic research in New York. Research expenditures system-wide reached nearly $1.1 billion in fiscal year 2021, including significant contributions from students and faculty. There are more than three million SUNY alumni worldwide, and one in three New Yorkers with a college degree is a SUNY alum. To learn more about how SUNY creates opportunity, visit www.suny.edu.

The Position:
SUNY seeks an experienced and highly capable leader with a proven record of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in a large, complex environment for this highly visible role. Serving as a senior advisor to the Chancellor, the VC/CDO will work across the SUNY system to implement a range of diversity-related programs and initiatives and help devise strategies to address ongoing and emerging issues many campuses face.  The VC/CDO will position SUNY as a leader in inclusionary practices in hiring, promotion and retention of faculty and staff and identify concrete measures to increase the diversity of faculty and administration to better reflect the diversity of the student population served. The VC/CDO will identify and provide professional development and mentoring opportunities for campus chief diversity officers to build a network of support and shared resources that leverage expertise and best practices across the system.  The VC/CDO will provide regular updates to the SUNY Board of Trustees on the implementation of a systemwide Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policy.

Required Education and Experience:
The successful candidate will have a tangible record of accomplishment identifying and implementing policies and institutional initiatives across a geographically dispersed organization spanning urban and rural settings, with state and local governments, external partners, and the various communities in which SUNY campuses are located.  The VC/CDO will have experience devising and implementing innovative, timely, and appropriate solutions that address ongoing and emerging issues impacting SUNY campuses and the ability to mobilize, connect with various constituent groups, and think creatively across boundaries.  The VC/CDO will possess outstanding listening and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to inspire and engage others and be viewed as collaborative, trustworthy and authentic. Knowledge of laws, regulations and guidelines related to diversity, equity, and inclusion and an understanding of the broader and multiple aspects of diversity and intersectionality are required. The VC/CDO will have the ability to navigate politically charged situations to resolve problems, build consensus, and reconcile competing interests that impact SUNY campuses.  The VC/CDO will have a deep commitment to the academic public mission and a demonstrated ability to implement and sustain programs dedicated to serving underrepresented students, faculty, and staff.  The VC/CDO must also understand the role of unions and their impact on policy and practice on campuses.  A doctorate or appropriate terminal degree is preferred.
