CONTEXT OF THE JOB:
Student Health Services (SHS) is the primary student health unit on the University of Delaware Campus. Situated within the Division of Student Life, SHS provides essential services and support to students and campus stakeholders to enhance the development of personal and social responsibility and to foster safe, healthy, inclusive, and supportive communities at UD. SHS partners with students and staff to develop vibrant inclusive environments which encourage student success and engagement, a culture of care for all members, values-congruent decision-making, and the cultivation of skills and knowledge so students may become citizens and leaders in our increasingly global society. Staff members support the Mission and Vision of Student Health Services as well as those of the Division of Student Life to ensure student success.

The Laboratory of the Student Health Service is an integral part of the total medical offerings provided by the University of Delaware. The Laboratory is a high-complexity COLA accredited laboratory. The Lab Coordinator functions under the direction of the Executive Director and Laboratory Director, Student Health Service.

The Lab Coordinator provides direction and supervision of the Student Health Service Laboratory to include oversight of all procedures pertaining to the operation of the Unit and is responsible for compliance with all State and Federal clinical laboratory regulations. The Coordinator reports directly to the Laboratory Director and the Executive Director of the Student Health Service and supervises all laboratory staff in the Student Health Lab.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintains quality laboratory operations in the Student Health Laboratory on a day-to-day basis.
  • Maintains COLA accreditation by adherence to regulations.
  • Evaluates test menus/provider pick list and methods to determine the need for revision/modification of procedures and/or test methods within the laboratory. Maintains procedure manuals for laboratory and point of care testing locations.
  • Coordinates and supervises all specimen testing. This may include medical staff consultation, student outreach, and review of tests performed.
  • Provides procedures for collection of specimens. Supervises specimen collection performed within the laboratory.
  • Provides test results and related information to attending physicians while ensuring patient privacy.
  • Ensures patient test results are not reported until all corrective action has been taken and test system is functioning properly.
  • Establishes a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed.
  • Oversees all data collection within the laboratory to include test results, QC, quality improvement studies, and statistics relative to test type and volume.
  • Enrolls the laboratory in an approved Proficiency Testing program and monitors evaluations.
  • Coordinates and supervises Laboratory Staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating competency, and providing educational opportunities.
  • Serves as the Point of Care testing coordinator providing training and competency documentation for personnel performing testing outside of the laboratory.
  • Evaluate utilization and performance of Point of Care tests offered at SHS and evaluate alternative options, if applicable.
  • Coordinates Unit problem solving inclusive of internal and external issues.
  • Oversees operation and maintenance of all laboratory equipment. This includes appropriate quality control, calibration, troubleshooting, and staff training.
  • Research and maintain appropriate equipment and lab contracts.
  • Maintains inventory of all laboratory supplies and reagents.
  • Purchases supplies through approved vendors and monitors all purchasing card transactions. Utilizes University payment system for billing.
  • In conjunction with information technology staff, responsible for maintenance of the Laboratory Information System. Serves as a liaison for external reference laboratory interfaces.
  • Serves as coordinator for interactions and problem resolution with reference laboratories, i.e., Lab Corp, Quest, and Delaware Public Health Laboratory.
  • In consultation with Executive Director and Laboratory Director, responsible for all Laboratory Unit planning to include test feasibility, cost analysis, test deletion and on-site versus off-site testing and any other issues that involves and/or affects Laboratory Services.
  • Serves as Departmental Chemical Safety Officer and represents the laboratory on various other committees such as Quality Improvement and Safety Committees.
  • Remain up to date with newly developed testing methods to assess emerging diseases and conditions.
  • Work closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, Medical Director, Medical Director of Athletic Medicine, and Executive Director to offer laboratory guidance on diagnostic tests offered.
  • Work closely with clinical staff to adjust lab schedule and services to improve patient care.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in a laboratory science discipline and a minimum of four years of clinical laboratory experience.
  • Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
  • Experience in coordination and supervision of a clinical laboratory preferred.
  • Technical knowledge and understanding of test methodologies and laboratory equipment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong independent thinking and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned staff including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments and make administrative and procedural decisions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of computers and lab-related computer databases preferred.
  • Must maintain professional competence through participation with other members of the health team and with other departments of the University and the community.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.
