About the Opportunity

The Chair of the Physical Therapy, Movement, and Rehabilitation Sciences (PTMRS) department is a full-time 52-week tenured faculty position leading the department and overseeing all administrative, academic and research-related responsibilities and activities . The Chair provides academic leadership and strategy for all teaching, service, research and professional development activities within the department in alignment with the School, Bouve College of Health Sciences and Northeastern University . The Chair represents and advocates for the department internally in a university climate of rapid, transformative growth, and externally to relevant accrediting bodies and stakeholders. The Chair will report to the Associate Dean for the School and the Dean of Bouve College of Health Sciences to advance the mission and strategic plan of the department, school, college and collectively contribute to University's Academic Plan.

The Chair is responsible for setting academic and intellectual priorities; maintaining standards of scholarly, academic, and pedagogical excellence in the department; and contributing to the growth and innovation of the Bouve College.

Additional responsibilities will include:
  • Collaborate with the college leadership, including other unit leaders, to advance the mission of the college and university.
  • Work closely with the college associate deans to advance various areas in alignment with the college goals and vision of the college and university.
  • Collaborate with unit's faculty to ensure the development and implementation of unit's governance procedures, including department faculty approved committee structure and other service roles.
  • Engage faculty in strategic planning regarding intellectual, scholarly and academic priorities aligned with the strategic plans of both the university and college.
  • Collaborate with unit's faculty to provide oversight of the development and delivery of academic programs offered by the department, ensuring high quality educational experiences for all traditional and professional students and learners.
  • Provide oversight and responsible stewardship of departmental resources, including staff and budget.
  • Assign faculty and staff work in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Evaluate faculty performance, in compliance with the university Faculty Handbook.
  • Evaluate staff performance, in compliance with university policies.
  • Ensure that faculty and staff have mentoring and support necessary for their success.
  • Ensure that applicable regional and programmatic accreditation standards are achieved, with input and in collaboration with the faculty; assist the university in meeting NECHE standards.
  • Collaborate with unit's faculty to implement and monitor assessment plans and quality improvement of academic programs, to achieve departmental excellence in all facets of research, scholarship, teaching, and service.
  • Foster a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accountability.
  • Collaborate with Associate Dean for Research & Innovation to expand research.
  • Recommend faculty and staff hiring/appointments, reappointment, promotion/tenure, and compensation after consultation with the faculty, according to unit's faculty approved procedures.


A terminal doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) in Physical Therapy or related area from an accredited institution and a track record of scholarship, teaching, and service which merit appointment at the rank of Full Professor with tenure are required. Certification and licensure as a physical therapist are strongly preferred by the appointment start date but are not required.

Experience in an academic administrative leadership role with demonstrated successes, understanding of the DPT accreditation process, clinical (DPT) and research (PhD) doctoral programs, curriculum development, university teaching, collaboration within a complex organization, a program of research with a record of publication, and success with obtaining extramural funding are desired. The successful candidate will be an innovative person with the personnel management skills that are necessary to build a shared vision that includes sensitivity to and competence with individuals of diverse backgrounds and cultures.

The cornerstone of the department of Physical Therapy, Movement, and Rehabilitation Sciences (PTMRS department) is experiential learning, which is aligned with the mission of Bouve College and Northeastern University's Academic Plan. With over 30 faculty members, the Department's vision is to lead through innovation, education, and research in human movement and rehabilitation sciences. We advance health, human movement, and rehabilitation sciences through interprofessional and experiential education, co-operative education (Co-op), research, and practice within a dynamic global society. Current research programs at the department include the Neuromotor Systems Laboratory, Rehabilitation Games and Extended Reality (ReGame-XR) Laboratory, Robotics, Rehabilitation, and Locomotion Laboratory, Musculoskeletal Epidemiology and Biomechanics Laboratory, Occupational Biomechanics and Ergonomics Laboratory, Soft Robotics and Sensing Laboratory, Neurophysiology Laboratory, Laboratory for Neural Engineering and Rehabilitation, Laboratory for Movement Neuroscience, and multiple laboratories in the Center for Cognitive and Brain Health. A new center for brain stimulation and modeling is also being established and will be co-located with the research-dedicated brain imaging center. The PT program at NU is currently ranked the #38 best physical therapy program in the United States by U.S. News & World Report and has been accredited by CAPTE since January 1930. It is one of the oldest accredited programs in the country. Accreditation reviews occur every 10 years to ensure quality education that meets the needs of the public and the profession. We were reaccredited on November 6, 2013 and are accredited until 2023. Two year graduation rate for the PT program is 99% while two year first time pass rate and two year average employment rate 6 months from graduation both stand at 97%.

The PTMRS Department is housed within the School of Clinical and Rehabilitation Sciences and is the academic home for several programs, including a three-year Post Baccalaureate Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), a Master's in Human Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences (standard and one-year accelerated format or Experiential Master's Degree - MSe), the Ph.D. in Human Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences, the Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy, and a Sports Physical Therapy Clinical Residency.

Northeastern features a cooperative education program, more commonly known as "co-op," that integrates classroom study with professional experience and includes over 3,100 partners across all seven continents. The program has been a key part of Northeastern's curriculum of experiential learning for more than a hundred years and is one of the largest co-op/internship programs in the world. While not required for all academic disciplines, participation is nearly universal among undergraduate and graduate students. Northeastern also has a comprehensive study abroad program that spans more than 170 universities and colleges.
