Assistant Dean & Director of the Academic Success Program

About the Opportunity

The Assistant Dean and Director of the Academic Success program will assess and address the support needs of full-time JD students, part-time JD students, and LLM students, working in collaboration with the Director of Bar Preparation Programs, the Dean of Students, and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. To promote student success, the Assistant Dean will teach courses, provide other programming, review student work, and offer individual counseling.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have a JD or comparable degree from an accredited institution by the appointment start date (e.g., JD, LLB or foreign equivalent) and a minimum of three years of experience practicing law or providing law-related instruction in an academic institution or a law firm. Candidates must have been admitted to a state bar in the United States.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

1) Academic support programming: Provide academic support through individual meetings with students and review of student work. Develop and deliver programming such as pre-matriculation initiatives and credit-bearing or non-credit-bearing courses designed to support at-risk students; also design and deliver workshops aimed at broader student populations. Supervise teaching assistants and supervise or collaborate with others hired to provide more targeted forms of academic support.

2) Individual academic counseling: Provide individual counseling with respect to study strategies, curricular choices, and other issues related to academic success.

3) Support for other law school functions: Participate in law school committees as assigned by the Dean or Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Represent the law school at, and participate in, outside conferences and other events organized for and/or by academic support professionals. Upon mutual agreement with the Dean, teach 1L or upper-level courses in the JD program or courses in the LLM or MLS programs, if appropriate.

4) Program design and implementation: Work collaboratively with the Director of Bar Preparation Programs, the Dean of Students, the Associate Dean for Digital Strategy, and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to assess and address the programming and individual support needs of part-time JD students, full-time JD students, and LLM students, from the period before matriculation to degree completion.

5) Data collection and analysis: Track the academic progress of JD students, particularly at-risk students, to ensure that they are receiving necessary academic support services.
