Summary/Objective

The Director of Strategic Communications and Marketing develops, communicates, directs and manages strategic outreach activities for the Washington College of Law, including in four critical areas: media relations, publications, web and social media content, and marketing.
The activities of the Office of Strategic Communications and Marketing (OSCM) are designed to support institutional goals in all areas, including admissions, development, career placement, teaching, research, alumni engagement, and internal and external constituent engagement for offices, programs, and initiatives at WCL. The OCSM will support and amplify WCL’s leadership and impact within the legal academy and legal profession. The position reports directly to the Dean and is a member of WCL’s senior leadership staff.

Essential Functions
  1. The Director of Strategic Communications and Marketing, in consultation with the Dean, leads the communications and public relations outreach for WCL. The Director is responsible for developing a cohesive communication and marketing strategy and works closely with the Dean, and WCL’s offices, centers, programs and initiatives to develop and implement best practices for disseminating materials and fulfilling institutional goals.
  2. The Director supervises a team of strategic communications and marketing professionals, each with primary responsibility for serving the needs of particular client offices, centers, programs and initiatives within WCL. Under the direction of the Director, the team also will proactively coordinate updates and develop content for the WCL website and social media accounts, and working with internal and external resources to develop communications and marketing materials, including WCL’s alumni magazine.
  3. The Director also oversees media relations for WCL, guiding the Dean and senior leadership on all aspects of media engagement and strategy.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master's degree in journalism, English, Communications or related field.
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience overseeing web content and working in communications in higher education or at another college of law is preferred.
  • Direct experience in broadcast or print journalism is helpful.
  • Experience with photography, video and/or graphic design is a plus.
