Department Summary
Living on campus adds tremendous value for students and the University. Students who live on campus their first year have higher grades, are retained at the University of Oregon at higher rates, graduate at higher rates and graduate more quickly.

University Housing, a department within the Division of Student Services and Enrollment Management, is committed to facilitating students' development as they build an inclusive community, establish a sense of home, and succeed academically. Our goal is to become the model of excellence for providing accessible, affordable, and student-centered living-learning experiences; the preferred choice for all UO students.

We value diversity and respect, integrity, equity and inclusion, learning and growth, responsibility and accountability, safety and security. University Housing staff work hard to incorporate these values into daily work and practices to ensure an excellent UO experience.

University Housing units include Business Services, Dining Services, Facilities Services, Promotions & Student Recruitment, and Residence Life. University Housing is a $68 million educational and business department that is a self-sustaining, self-liquidating agency of the University (receives no tuition or tax support for its operating budget).

Position Summary
The Transporter position is a limited duration position designed for the purpose of transporting students who have tested or presumed positive for COVID-19. The person in this position will drive a University-owned van between campus locations. Personal protective equipment is provided and controls are in place to eliminate routine potential exposure.

Drivers will transport students from University Health Center to University Housing, or between University General Housing and Isolation/Quarantine Housing. In addition to driving a university vehicle carrying student passengers, drivers will conduct daily recurrent cleaning and disinfection of the vehicle and may provide baggage-handling services when student's belongings must move with them between assigned Housing locations. Routine recordkeeping and administrative duties requiring the use of a computer will occupy non-transport time. For example, duties may include maintaining records of transports and mail or package sorting.

This position will require a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain UO Driver's Certification. This position may be required to lift up to 30 pounds. The person in this position must be able to pass medical health screening and fit-testing necessary to wear a required N95 respirator. Please note: some types of facial hair may not be compatible with N95 respirators.

Shifts are expected to be scheduled between 10:00 or 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., 3-4 days per week. For example, possible work schedules are Sunday to Wednesday and Wednesday to Saturday. Transport is needed 7 days per week. Some on-call shifts may be required.

Drivers will be provided respiratory protection, eye protection, and protective outerwear. Transport drivers may be within less than 6 feet of COVID-positive (or presumptive-positive) individuals for very brief periods of time, never to exceed 2 minutes individually, or 15 minutes per day. A robust combination of respiratory protection, gloves, eye protection, outerwear and engineered controls (separating driver airspace from passenger airspace) eliminate routine potential for exposure to viral contaminants in air or on surfaces; potential for exposure resulting in close-contact status could occur if controls failed, and failure was not recognized and acted upon by the driver.

Minimum Requirements
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain UO Driver's Certification

    Professional Competencies
  • Ability to respond rapidly to emergent and unplanned calls for service
  • Ability to stay calm and provide good customer service in stressful situations
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in the safe operation of the vehicle

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience operating a van involving the transport of people
  • Ability to respond to on-call needs on the UO campus within 30 minutes

    FLSA Exempt: No
