School of Nursing Dean and Full Professor

About the Opportunity

Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

The Bouve College of Health Sciences has over 200 faculty members, with approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate students. It is the leading national model for education and research in the health, psychosocial and biomedical sciences and supports the University's mission of educating students for a life of fulfillment and accomplishment and creating and translating knowledge to meet global and societal needs.

Nested within the Bouve College of Health Sciences, the School of Nursing awards a wide range of programs from baccalaureate through doctoral degrees, including Philosophy (PhD) and Nursing Practice (DNP) and several certificate programs. The School currently has approximately 1200 students and 48 full-time faculty across the Boston, Burlington and Charlotte (NC), campuses.

Northeastern University, a preeminent global, experiential, research university seeks an experienced, visionary leader as its next Dean, School of Nursing.

The Dean will build on the current success of the School and its faculty and take to the next level its development as a national leader in nursing education and applied research. Working with the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners throughout the School, Bouve College, and the University, the Dean will provide intellectual leadership and strategic direction for the School to assume a prominent role both regionally, nationally and internationally in addressing the critical needs of the profession.

At Northeastern University, we embrace a culture of respect, where each person is valued for their contribution and is treated fairly. We oppose all forms of racism. We support a culture that does not tolerate any form of discrimination and where each person may belong. We strive to have a diverse membership, one where each person is trained and mentored to promote their success.

Working with the Dean of Bouve College, the Bouve Leadership Team, the SON faculty, staff, students, donors, alumni, other NU leaders and key stakeholders, the SON Dean will provide the leadership, vision, and strategic planning to accelerate the upward trajectory of the school, in alignment with the vision of the Bouve College and Northeastern. The SON Dean will foster a fiscally responsible, innovative and supportive environment to continue advancing our internationally recognized research enterprise, innovative educational programs, and lifelong learning opportunities.

The SON Dean will guide faculty, staff, and student recruitment, development, advancement and retention. As the school's chief representative and advocate, the SON Dean will work closely with the Dean of Bouve College to articulate the school's vision and goals both externally to potential students, faculty, alumni, affiliated health service providers, research industry partners, and donors, as well as internally across the Bouve College and the broader Northeastern University system. The SON Dean will be guided by a strong entrepreneurial spirit to help identify and encourage new initiatives and collaborations that can broaden and strengthen the school's programs. The SON Dean will guide and support a collegial, interprofessional academic community characterized by communication, transparency and commitment, as well as inclusiveness, diversity, and respect—all core values at Northeastern University.

Minimum requirements include a Ph.D, DNP, or EdD in nursing or a related field; a record of distinguished teaching and research; prior administrative experience, preferably within an academic setting; proven success in external funding; eligibility to obtain RN licensure in Massachusetts and credentials that merit appointment at the rank of full tenured professor in nursing.

The next Dean will possess the vision and the communication, management, and leadership skills to ensure operational excellence and sustainable growth and differentiation of the School of Nursing. The successful candidate will be a person of high integrity, who is creative, confident and a strategic risk taker with a strong record of collaborative leadership and commitment to academic excellence and community service.

Successful faculty at Northeastern will be dynamic and innovative scholars with a record of research and teaching excellence and a commitment to contributing to improved equity, diversity, and inclusion. Thus, strong candidates for this faculty position will have the experience, knowledge, and skills to build their research, pedagogy, and curriculum in ways that reflect and enhance this commitment. Please indicate how your experience, knowledge, and skills have prepared you to contribute to this work with written statements addressing the following prompts:

Research statement:

Please describe the focus of your research, including the questions you have identified, the funding you have received to support the work (if applicable), the results you have discovered, and the products of these efforts. Please also describe any research you have undertaken with students, with the external community, and/or with individuals from marginalized groups. Finally, please outline the research directions you foresee pursuing in the Bouve College of Health Sciences.

Teaching statement:

Please summarize your past instructional and mentorship experiences, your pedagogical philosophy, your plans/goals for teaching in the Bouve College of Health Sciences (including existing and proposed courses), and your strategies for teaching and mentoring a diverse cohort of undergraduate and graduate students.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity statement:

Please provide an example of a time when you altered or changed your approach to research, teaching, or service because of the diversity of the group you were working with or your awareness of marginalized populations. What changes did you make? Did they have the effects that you hoped for at the time? What did you learn from this situation? How would you expect to apply what you learned from this situation as a faculty member in the Bouve College of Health Sciences? We are interested in how you handled and learned from a past situation, not the identities of the people involved, so please only disclose what you are comfortable with.
