Job Description Summary

Under the leadership of Chapman University’s new Provost and the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Faculty Advancement, Chapman University seeks to hire an inaugural Executive Director for its Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. This exciting new position builds on the long success of Chapman’s former Institute for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and reflects the university’s new vision for the future of faculty advancement. Working in collaboration with faculty and administrators the Executive Director will be responsible for the creation and delivery of new and continuing programs to support the professional development of faculty and will have frequent opportunities to interact with colleagues across campus.

Because this position will serve as one of the key support contacts within the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Faculty Advancement, the ideal candidate should have both a breadth and depth of understanding the issues facing faculty members in various fields of study and in a variety of teaching modalities.

Responsibilities

Faculty development programming within the CETL
  • Manage a first-year faculty colloquium program for new hires each year.
  • Host regular workshops for all faculty that focus on innovative models of excellent instruction, including topical summer and winter faculty academies.
  • Lead campus conversations regarding the art and science of teaching.

Management of instructional design and the development of Chapman’s online degree portfolio
  • Lead campus efforts to analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate new online and hybrid courses and programs.
  • Develop policies and procedures to ensure that Chapman faculty are guided by best practices in academia.
  • Liaise with campus offices to guide and support the direction of effective classroom technologies based on emerging trends

Faculty outreach and community building
  • Coordinate and participate in New Faculty Orientation sessions for part time and fulltime faculty.
  • Lead the Faculty Ambassador program, with representatives from the academic units coordinating discipline-specific teaching supports and professional growth.
  • Assist faculty with the development of teaching portfolios for the purposes of Tenure and Promotion Review.

Administration of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning
  • Supervise a staff of 2 FTE Instructional Designers plus student assistants as needed.
  • Collaborate with faculty co-director.
  • Develop and manage university-wide communications for all CETL programming and initiatives. Manage budget in consultation with the Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness and Faculty Advancement.

Assessment and evaluation of teaching
  • Enhance the end-of-semester course evaluation process.
  • Consult individually with faculty members to develop effective teaching skills and/or to address specific teaching challenges, especially as evidenced by course evaluations
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or terminal degree required.
  • At least 5 years teaching experience, or equivalent years of experience leading campus faculty development efforts at a 4-year college or university.
  • Effective collaborator, team player, and visionary who can build momentum towards successfully articulating and implementing faculty development goals.
  • Fluency in the evolving nature of the landscape of instructional technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience managing the design and development of online programs.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong project management skills, including creative problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Culturally competent, possess a deep understanding of issues surrounding equity and inclusion in higher education, and attuned to the varieties of intersectionality, not only of gender, gender identity, ethnicity and sexual orientation, but also class, religion, national origin, and race.
  • Positive attitude with the ability to effectively navigate conflict and dialogue.
  • Demonstrate fairness, transparency, competency, and empathy.
  • Ability to make strategic, evidence-based decisions in a culture of open communication.
Desired Qualifications
