The Department of Entomology & Plant Pathology at North Carolina State University invites applications for two 12-month tenure-track positions at the Assistant Professor level in Extension Plant Pathology. Both faculty positions are located on the main campus in Raleigh, and incumbents are responsible for extension engagement and research related to their extension responsibilities. We are a top-ranked department for our disciplines and recently hired a new enthusiastic department head bringing us new vitality. We welcome energetic candidates that share our vision.

The successful candidates are each expected to develop an independent internationally recognized program focusing on the biology, ecology, epidemiology, population biology and management of plant diseases in one or more field crops (corn, cotton, peanut, soybean, and tobacco), implementing contemporary diagnostic technologies, and developing integrated disease management strategies for established and emerging plant diseases in North Carolina. The candidates will have a strong foundation in hypothesis-driven research aimed at enhancing strategies for plant disease management in field crops grown in North Carolina and are expected to develop an area of relevant expertise while maintaining a breadth of knowledge regarding plant diseases of field crops grown in the state. Incumbents are expected to generate extramural funding to help support their research program following start-up resources. Examples of funding opportunities include grower checkoff organizations at the state level (corn, cotton, peanut, soybean, and tobacco) and nationally, the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation, USDA, Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research, the agricultural industry, and University and college initiatives, such as the Plant Sciences Initiative.

The incumbents are also expected to participate in county agent and area specialist trainings and to develop and deliver relevant information to commercial growers and other industry clientele by multiple mechanisms regarding effective plant disease management solutions. The successful candidates are expected to participate in the training of M.S. and Ph.D. students and contribute to the academic mission of the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology with invited lectures and seminars.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NC State University prides itself on the opportunities for intra- and inter-departmental collaboration. Extension and research faculty and staff in the departments of Crop and Soil Sciences, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural and Resource Economics, Applied Ecology, and Plant and Microbial Biology comprise the network of possible collaborators both on and off campus. NC State has more plant breeders than any other US university; therefore, ample opportunity exists for field crop cultivar improvement. In addition, programs, centers, and clusters such as Genetics and Genomics Scholars, Climate Change and Society, Emerging Plant Disease-Global Food Security, and the Center for Geospatial Analytics offer opportunities for involvement and networking. Societal engagement with organizations such as the American Phytopathological Society (APS), American Peanut Research and Education Society (APRES), Cooperation Centre for Scientific Research Relative to Tobacco (CORESTA), Tobacco Workers Conference (TWC), soybean virus group, etc. will be encouraged. Involvement with Extension Agronomic Program Teams (cotton, grains, peanuts, and tobacco) is also encouraged.

Minimum qualifications include a PhD in a field of study directly related to the position. A demonstrated background in plant pathology or related fields, and expertise in the biology, ecology, etiology, epidemiology, population biology and/or management of plant diseases are preferred. NC State University is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their experience, research, teaching, extension, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. In addition to excellence in research and extension, the incumbents are expected to have demonstrable skills in verbal and written communication and interpersonal relations.

Required application documentation includes a cover letter describing research accomplishments and plans, CV with contact information for 3-5 references, a separate one-page statement of their agricultural extension philosophy, and a one-page statement of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The positions include a competitive and comprehensive compensation and start-up package. Review of applications will proceed as of September 1, 2022 until the positions are filled.
