Position Description

Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) is searching for an experienced enrollment management professional to serve as the next Assistant Dean for Enrollment Services. The Assistant Dean is charged with developing the strategy to fulfill the department's vision of being a national leader in recruiting, enrolling, and supporting the most diverse and talented graduate public policy/administration student body. The Kennedy School is seeking a technology and data-driven, innovative, and supportive leader with a history of success in enrollment management and cultivating a diverse and talented staff committed to ongoing professional development and growth.

The Assistant Dean oversees all Enrollment Services functions and activities, including the direct supervision of the Senior Director of Admissions & Financial Aid, Registrar, Associate Director of Enrollment Marketing, Associate Director of Student Enrollment Systems, and Staff Assistant. The Assistant Dean will lead these direct reports, and the larger Enrollment Services team, through and beyond a period of organizational transition.

Candidates must have experience leading senior level colleagues, developing and executing a strategic enrollment services vision, managing, and using systems and data to drive effective decision-making, and bringing together colleagues from different functions to define and achieve enrollment goals and ensure compliance.

As a member of the Degree Programs and Student Affairs (DPSA) leadership team, the Assistant
Dean works collaboratively in support of the mission and goals of DPSA, HKS and the University.
In consultation with the Senior Associate Dean for Degree Programs and Student Affairs, the
Assistant Dean develops strategies for all enrollment services areas including admissions,
financial aid, marketing, student record and registration management, and systems and data management. The Assistant Dean is responsible for assuming a key leadership role in high-level planning and conversations with constituents, across the HKS community and the University, on matters pertaining to student body composition, admissions practices and results, fundraising to support recruitment and fellowships, marketing and communications approaches to recruiting students, record management and other enrollment services. This includes developing and implementing strategies for enhancing the quality and diversity of the student body.

Additional responsibilities include:
  • Contribute to DPSA's strategic planning efforts and other department-wide initiatives.
  • In partnership with senior leadership, develop and implement effective, long range enrollment plans; develop target audiences, participate in admission decisions, and collaborate on the admissions profile
  • Oversee enrollment data analysis to prepare enrollment headcount, financial projections, and conduct strategic planning efforts.
  • Strategize with and ensure that the enrollment office employs best practices in support of a community of students from richly diverse backgrounds.
  • Serve on internal and university-wide committees to inform school-wide policies.
  • Contribute to special projects and initiatives as needed

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 10 years' relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience


Additional Qualifications and Skills

Master's Degree strongly preferred. Candidate must have a collaborative, empathetic, supportive, diplomatic style of leadership; possess excellent written and verbal communications and marketing skills. Experience with budget projection and management and high-level data analysis required. Experience with supervisory management of individuals and teams at varying levels and across departments. Experience leading teams in transition. Ability to drive change and deliver results in a complex, decentralized, and political environment. Very strong working knowledge of issues and trends in topics of admissions, recruitment, financial aid, financial aid compliance and student enrollment. Experience using and managing complex database and enrollment systems and projects. Demonstrated experience with developing successful strategies for strengthening the diversity of a student body. Attention to detail/organization/documentation.

  • Sitting using near vision use for reading and computer use for extended periods of time
  • Lifting (approximately 20 to 30 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion
