The University of Chicago Divinity School invites applications for tenured position(s) at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the area of Global Christianity, for an appointment date of July 1, 2023, or some date thereafter. Applications are encouraged from scholars who work on Christian practices, communities, rituals, theologies, histories and traditions in any geographical region(s) (e.g., Asian, Latin American and African contexts); in any historical period(s), past and/or contemporary; and reflecting any disciplinary and methodological approaches (e.g., sociological, anthropological, historical, philosophical, post-colonial, literary, cultural, gender studies, theological) and topical interests (e.g., Christianity and the political sphere; Christianity in relation to other religious movements, local and global; migration and diasporic communities, lives and practices; the legacies of missionary and colonial encounters; language/discourse and forms of social formation).  Candidates should be able to articulate a clear and compelling vision of the field of “Global Christianity” and help build a program/research strength across the Divinity School and the University.

 

The Divinity School is the graduate professional school for the academic study of religion at the University of Chicago, a private research university. Faculty in the School teach graduate students in its Ph.D., M.A., M.Div., and A.M.R.S. programs, and undergraduates in the College. Many members of the faculty hold associate appointments in departments in the Humanities or Social Science divisions and professional schools of the University. 

 

Candidates must hold the Ph.D. or equivalent degree.  Candidates for the position should have an outstanding record of publication, a significant research trajectory into the future, and proven pedagogical effectiveness. They should also have a compelling research agenda and the ability and eagerness to engage in conversation with a diverse range of scholars and students of religion and other fields across the University.
