The Department of Asian Languages and Literatures at Carleton College invites applications for a non-tenure-track continuing lectureship in Chinese, to begin September 1, 2023. This is a full-time appointment with an initial two-year term and the possibility of renewal for an additional two-year term as a lecturer, typically followed by six-year renewable appointments and possible promotion to senior lecturer, contingent on successful reviews.

We seek candidates who can teach Chinese-language courses at all levels, and are passionate about teaching in a liberal arts setting. The position will involve teaching in the Chinese language sequence and linguistics or literature courses in their area of specialization, as well as coordination of the language program. Native or near-native fluency in both Chinese and English is required.

The candidate will have a Ph.D. completed or substantially completed in Chinese linguistics or literature at the time of application, and must have had experience in teaching Chinese language at the college level. Field of specialization is open, but the successful candidate will bring expertise in a second field that will expand interdisciplinary offerings at the college and attract students from outside Chinese Studies. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a willingness to participate actively in the life of the department and to contribute to extra-curricular activities. Teaching load is five or six courses per year (11 courses every two years). The Carleton calendar includes three 10-week terms.

Lecturers at Carleton are continuing members of the faculty and central to the life of their respective departments and of the College as a whole. Compensation includes full faculty benefits, including professional development support. For more detailed information on benefits, consult: https://www.carleton.edu/human-resources/benefits/

We are particularly interested in candidates committed to teaching a diverse student body. Carleton is committed to developing its faculty to better reflect the diversity of our student body and American society. Women and members of underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Carleton College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, ethnicity, religion, sex, national origin, marital status, veteran status, actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, status with regard to public assistance, disability, or age in providing employment or access to its educational facilities and activities.

Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of approximately 2,000, located in the historic and thriving town of Northfield, Minnesota. We are within commuting distance of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, whose greater metro area has a diverse population of three million people and a rich variety of cultural resources.

Applicants may also upload a teaching portfolio or other relevant teaching materials; teaching videos are encouraged. The deadline for receipt of applications is December 1, 2022.
