Position Summary

The Laboratory for NanoPhotonics in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University has an open postdoctoral associate position, to be advised by Prof. Naomi Halas. The position will have a flexible start date starting in July 2022. The selected candidate work in collaboration with an Army Research Laboratory collaborator to develop novel optical instrumentation for exploring the light absorption and scattering properties of plasmonic nanostructures and energetic materials. The focus of the work will be on designing, constructing, and operating experiments composed of lasers and spectrometers for measuring the spectral and temporal evolution of the optical and thermal properties of tailored nanostructured materials.

Highly qualified candidates will have a strong background in optics with demonstrated experience performing spectroscopic measurements and analyses of light-matter interactions. Specific desired skills include experience with the construction of spectrometers or microscopes, the operation of mode locked, pulsed, and continuous wave lasers, and proficiency writing and using laboratory software for operating instrumentation and analyzing data. Successful applicants will be strong technically as well as have an inclination towards real-world problems. The candidate should have strong written and oral communication skills, evidenced by their previous publications and presentations. As a key senior team member, the candidate will also be expected to aid in the supervision of junior lab members and in the preparation of research proposals. The candidate will be mentored in application for competitive internal and external postdoctoral fellowships.

The position is hiring at a starting salary between $48,000 to $60,000 per year.

Essential Functions
  • Designs and constructs novel spectroscopic instrumentation and optical systems
  • Performs ultraviolet/visible/infrared spectroscopic characterization of nanostructured materials, including absorption, emission, Raman, and time-resolved spectroscopy and lightfield/darkfield microscopy.
  • Operates, aligns, optimizes, and uses mode locked, pulsed, and continuous wave lasers
  • Develops software for operating instrumentation and analyzing data using such tools as MatLab, LabView, Origin, and WinSpec
  • Publishes papers and presents findings at prestigious international conferences
  • Mentors and trains junior research team members, such as PhD students, master students and undergraduates
  • Assists with proposal development to obtain research funding from agencies
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in electrical engineering, chemistry, physics, applied physics or a closely related field
