We acknowledge that our campus at King's University College (“King’s”) is situated on the traditional territories of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, Lūnaapéewak, and Chonnonton peoples, all of whom have longstanding relationships to the land of Southwestern Ontario and the City of London. The First Nations communities of our local area include Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, Oneida Nation of the Thames, and Munsee Delaware Nation. In our region, there are eleven First Nations communities, as well as a growing Indigenous urban population. King’s University College values the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America).

Founded in 1954, King’s University College at Western University is a Catholic, liberal arts University College affiliated with a large, world-class university. King’s students enjoy ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ – learning in small classes led by outstanding faculty on a small, beautiful campus while enjoying the experiences of being part of a comprehensive university. King’s students have complete access to all the facilities and services at Western University and graduate with a Western degree. Experiential learning – domestic and international - as well as the King’s Promise (https://www.kings.uwo.ca/current-students/kings-promise/), and a myriad of campus extracurricular opportunities balanced with an outstanding academic learning environment distinguish King’s as a leading Liberal Arts University in Canada. As a Catholic university, King’s emphasizes the value of each individual and the importance of social justice. Students, faculty and staff from all faiths and backgrounds are welcome. Respect for the human person is behind our commitment to diversity, accessibility, social justice and to building the common good. Being an inclusive, supportive community is one of King's greatest strengths.

King’s is recognized, both nationally and internationally, for its excellent academic programs, commitment to research excellence, generous scholarships and comprehensive student services. Offering degree programs in the arts, social sciences, management and social work [both BSW (honours) and MSW], King’s is home to approximately 3500 full- and part-time students from across Canada as well as 35 other countries.

King’s invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President Academic & Research (VPAR).

Reporting to the President, and in conjunction with Vice-Presidents, as King’s Senior Academic Administrator, the VPAR develops strategic directions, policies and initiatives consistent with King’s affiliation agreements, its mission and strategic plan. As such, the VPAR provides leadership to and coordination of activities within King’s Research Office including its research profile and strategies for external grant funding, the Academic Dean’s office, all academic departments and the schools of Social Work, and Management, Economics and Math (MEM), Student Affairs and Services, the Office of Enrollment Services, and King’s Cardinal Carter Library. The VPAR is responsible for, and carries out, the duties as prescribed within the Collective Agreement with the faculty union as constituted, including recommendations to the President on the promotion and tenure of faculty and advising faculty on probationary contracts concerning their eligibility for a tenured appointment. The VPAR also directs and coordinates the preparation of the academic and research budget proposals and oversees the expenditures of the approved budgets, in conjunction with the President, College Council, Faculty Council and the academic units.  The VPAR is an ex officio member of the Board of Directors; an ex-officio member of College Council and of all its standing committees; the Chair of Faculty Council and ex-officio member of all its standings committees; and a Member of the King’s negotiations committee for negotiations with KUCFA and CUPE. The VPAR will develop and maintain positive working relations within King’s and at other universities, the constituent university (Western University) and the Affiliated University Colleges, and represents King’s within the greater community.  At the discretion of the President, the VPAR may assume the role of Acting President and coordinate with the other VP’s to ensure stability in the day-to-day operations of King’s in the absence of the President.

As the Senior Academic Administrator of a leading publicly funded Liberal Arts Catholic University College and subject to the academic and administrative restraints that apply, the VPAR assists the President in providing leadership in responding to matters pertaining to King’s as a Catholic University College; and assists the President in fostering good relations with various Catholic constituencies and organizations.

As the ideal candidate, you have a record of distinguished research, scholarship and teaching coupled with experience in academic administration. You are committed to supporting a community of engaged scholars by enhancing academic programs, support for research, and an inclusive and empowering space for students, faculty and staff. You have financial management competencies and experience managing complex budgets with competing priorities. Colleagues describe you as a clear communicator, a skilled relationship builder, a practical leader who can make decisions in times of stress, and sometimes, without all the information, and a strong supporter of equity, diversity and inclusion and with supporting decolonialization and Indigenous ways of knowing, being and excellence. Candidates should demonstrate a familiarity with the Catholic tradition of higher education and the recent major documents pertaining to Catholic education, specifically Ex corde Ecclesiae. Candidates must hold a PhD and be appointable at the rank of full professor.

To apply or explore this exceptional leadership opportunity with King’s University College, please submit a curriculum vitae along with a cover letter in confidence to Jane Griffith (jane@griffithgroup.ca) and/or Sam Walton (sam@griffithgroup.ca) or visit https://griffithgroup.ca/vp-academic-research-kings-university-college/.
