The Presidential Profile

The District Governing Board of Coconino Community College is actively seeking a President who will honor CCC's unique culture, traditions, and history while providing leadership in taking the College to the next levels of achievement and student success. The new President will be the sixth in the institution’s 31-year history.

The next President of Coconino Community College will find a supportive, collegial, and student-centered environment, keenly focused on the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The incoming President will inherit a culture of community engagement, financial sustainability, and a supportive and knowledgeable District Governing Board.

The future President will have an opportunity to nurture the many partnerships between the College, business, industry and tourism, and various community organizations.  The College President will value the role as the face of the institution and be highly visible to the college community and Coconino County at large.

The President must understand the challenges inherent in a rural environment that is enriched by diverse populations, realizing that the Native American and Hispanic populations account for the largest base of institutional enrollment while at the same time recognizing the importance of serving various groups such as veterans, individuals with disabilities, underrepresented populations, and other vibrant cultures present in Coconino County. Additionally, the next President will exhibit the ability to expand the outreach and mission of the College creatively with limited financial resources.

Desirable Characteristics

The successful new president will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • Exemplify a behavioral leadership style characterized by care for students, faculty, staff, and members in the community.
  • Champion innovative teaching and learning that leads to student success.
  • Recruit, retain, and develop diverse staff and faculty who are representative of the student population.
  • Serve, support, and interact with students.
  • Successfully lead college accreditation processes.
  • Achieve success in navigating change and responding to unforeseen challenges.
  • Understand the role of distance learning and other modes of delivery.
  • Develop and implement innovative safety and security measures designed to keep students, staff, and faculty safe.
  • Empower, delegate to, and support staff, faculty, and administrators while holding them accountable.
  • Develop and deliver successful targeted workforce development and CTE programs while promoting and establishing valuable partnerships with business and industry.
  • Lead successful fundraising - creating alternate sources of revenue and working with the College Foundation.
  • Value effective participatory governance that is inclusive of all constituents.
  • Encourage and provide professional development for all employees.
  • Make good fiscal management decisions and acquire new resources using knowledge, extensive experience, and skills.
  • Build partnerships with leaders in business and industry, P-16 education, and community-based organizations.
  • Successful legislative advocacy at the local and state level for the institution they represent with locally elected officials, state legislative groups, and statewide elected officials.
  • Possess an awareness of the state of education in Arizona.
  • Advocate for continued growth and development of dual credit and concurrent enrollment opportunities and close partnerships with P-12 entities.
  • Demonstrate experience working with rural and under-represented populations, including success in recruitment, retention, and development of those student and employee populations.
  • Establish a respectful working relationship with each member of the governing board.
  • Be visible, accessible, and approachable on campus and in the community.
  • Practice active listening, and exhibit excellent written and verbal communication, as well as a high level of interpersonal skills.
  • Model respect for the contributions of all staff and faculty.
  • Be a collaborative, transparent, and decisive decision-maker willing to take risks.
  • Model and encourage a high level of energy, enthusiasm, and creativity.

Opportunities And Challenges

In addition to the multiple roles and responsibilities in a rural multi-site college, the new President of Coconino Community College must be able to:

  • Model through example the understanding of and empathy with the student population who come from humble beginnings and live modest and simple lives.
  • Lead, inspire, and support all college employees toward the achievement of innovation, program excellence, and student success and completion.
  • Ensure access and success for the communities’ diverse and underrepresented populations.
  • Implement and build upon the Strategic Plan and Program Prioritization processes currently being developed by the college.
  • Practice a collaborative leadership style resulting in a positive campus climate characterized by unity, collegiality, and respect.
  • Lead the college in maintaining long term fiscal stability.
  • Build and strengthen partnerships with education, business, industry, and community organizations.
  • Strengthen and expand our successful working relationships and partnerships with Northern Arizona University and its new president.
  • Enhance the positive reputation of and support for the college throughout the region.
  • Advocate strongly for the college with local, state, and national political leaders.
  • Appreciate the unique challenges of a rural college serving a large geographical area with multiple communities.
  • Encourages the College to explore and adopt sustainability practices in its operations and move towards a carbon-neutral environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned Master’s Degree from an accredited institution (a doctorate degree strongly preferred).
  • Senior administrative leadership experience in higher education, preferred at the community college level, for a minimum of 3 years.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the teaching and learning process leading to student success; prior teaching experience strongly preferred.    
  • Demonstrated understanding of the community college mission. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to serving a diverse student body and recruiting, retaining, and developing a faculty and staff that resembles the student body.
