POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the President, and serving on the President’s Council, the VPAA serves as the University’s primary academic officer, providing vision and leadership in directing and overseeing the work of all faculty and ancillary academic activities (such as the library, eLearning, and student support services). The VPAA aligns and coordinates the development and implementation of all academic programs, graduate and undergraduate, online and on ground, consistent with our mission and strategy. The VPAA provides the President with the final recommendation on faculty personnel actions and decisions, and actively works with the Deans and Chairs on faculty development.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Strategic Planning & Policy Development:

Shapes, communicates and implements an academic vision that integrates with and advances our mission and strategic direction, and helps distinguish the University’s brand, while meeting fiscal responsibilities and ensuring the effective stewardship of resources.

 

Guides, participates in and coordinates the Strategic Planning process for the academic portion of the University. This includes planning for new academic programs, as well as overseeing the identification and planning for academic conferences and symposiums, research institutes, institutional alliances, and collaborations that provide for the future advancement of our mission and University graduates. Plans should include specific steps or opportunities to create a global niche for the University that provides job opportunities and service opportunities to our students.

 

Role includes developing business plans and projections for the education projects and proposed projects; as well as designing and effectively implementing sound educational policies and processes that provide students, faculty, and staff with the best possible learning and work environment.

 

Leading & Managing Faculty Personnel:

Develops and executes a plan that results in faculty who are ever more academically excellent, passionately Catholic, and exemplary mission fits. Plans, recommends and implements faculty personnel decisions including hiring, promotion, and tenure of regular faculty; and appointments of Academic Deans and Directors.

 

Develops effective relationships with, and optimizes the performance and impact of, the Academic Deans through active mentoring, coaching, feedback and development.

 

Guides and ensures the Deans and Chairs have appropriate focus and processes in place for mentoring, coaching, providing feedback to and developing the faculty in their respective areas. Participates as requested in faculty development efforts.

 

Facilitates, develops and recommends a succession planning process, successor candidates and successor development for key academic leadership positions.

 

Works with the Faculty Welfare Council and Deans to ensure the timely publication and effective administration of the Faculty Handbook.

 

Educational Programming & Accreditation:

Ensures that all program and curriculum development and offerings are consistent with the University’s mission and strategic priorities; and that all programs support and enhance student enrollment and completion rates.

 

Maintains or enhances our academic standing by overseeing and ensuring: the continuous review, evaluation and enhancement of current programs and curricula; planning and establishing of new courses, academic programs, and curriculum development.

 

Leads all efforts related to university-wide accreditation, specific program and professional accreditation.

 

The Student Experience & Outcomes:

Sets, communicates and oversees achievement of educational program quality and performance standards to meet current and future student needs.

 

Ensures achievement and maintenance of satisfactory academic progress in the areas of attendance, grades, matriculation, retention and graduation.

 

Defines, tracks and evaluates data regarding quality instruction, institutional effectiveness, and student learning outcomes – driving continual improvement in all areas.

 

Notifies individual students of their academic honors, probations, and dismissals based on reviews by the Academic Review Board on which the VPAA serves.

 

Fiscal Planning & Management:

Directs, oversees and coordinates the University’s Integrated Planning and Budgeting process across all academic units. Helps unit leaders rationalize, allocate and prioritize resources at the unit and institutional levels.

 

Makes recommendations to the President as to the fiscal priorities of academic affairs. Keeps the VP of Finance and the President apprised of priority fiscal needs within academic affairs.

 

Models and drives implementation of the University’s System of Management for setting, reporting and course correcting on operational or annual objectives of the Division.

 

Oversees the maintenance, development, and use of the educational facilities, including all academic buildings, laboratories, and the library. Works with others to plan for the appropriate improvements of all such facilities.

 

Governance & Community:

Works with the Deans, Chairs, the Faculty Council, the Faculty Welfare Committee, and other faculty committees to ensure the desired new programs and program innovations, quality and performance standards, and academic policies and procedures are developed, successfully shepherded through the shared governance process, and successfully implemented.

 

Helps shape and facilitate the effective and productive interaction within, between and across the various governance groups.

 

Under the direction of the President, keeps the Board of Trustees and other University groups appropriately informed of developments within academic affairs.

 

Develops and maintains mutually supportive and collaborative relationships with all President’s Council members, as well as other leaders across the campus community. Creates and seizes opportunities to engage Staff Vice-Presidents around ways to continually advance our mission and strategy.

 

Models Franciscan charisms such as ongoing conversion, lively faith, respect for the human person, and humility.

 

Other:

Undertakes other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the President of the University.

REQUIREMENTS

Must understand, support, and embrace the mission of Franciscan University of Steubenville and possess the following:

 

Work Experience

  • At least ten (10) years of demonstrated academic experience in teaching, scholarship, and service; and a track record of assessing scholarly and teaching potential in others. At least eight (8) years of progressive administration experience in higher education. At least five (5) years of demonstrated experience in leading and managing academic and staff personnel. Should be qualified for tenure and at least the rank of associate professor.

Education/Credentials

  • Must hold a terminal degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate discipline. Must possess certifications and licenses as appropriate to individual academic discipline.

Skills and Competencies

  • Must demonstrate a living of and absolute commitment to support the University’s mission, charisms, and the teachings of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. This includes making the Profession of Faith and taking the Oath of Fidelity. Must understand the technologies necessary to communicate regularly and effectively with the faculty, academic staff, President’s Council peer members, and the Board of Trustees. Must have experience in and passion for teaching and research, and be proficient in the technologies appropriate to the VPAA’s specific discipline. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing both to serve the internal needs of the University and to represent the University to external audiences. Must demonstrate a track record of successfully promoting and implementing the value and effective practices of a university-wide shared governance model of leadership and decision-making. Must have demonstrated success in planning and leading joint projects with internal and external stakeholders. International experience and ability to work effectively with international faculty, staff, and students preferred.
