Position Summary:

The University of Dayton Department of Communication invites applications for a tenure-track position specializing in Health Communication at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 16, 2023.

The Department is a co-sponsor of an undergraduate concentration in Health Communication, and delivers a graduate certificate in Health Communication. We have close relationships with numerous health organizations in the area, including Premier Health, CareSource, and Dayton Children's Hospital. In addition, the city of Dayton has a burgeoning downtown area, 20 expansive metroparks, a bike share program, several historic neighborhoods, and the Dayton Aviation Heritage and National Historical Park. It is a great place for those who want a bit of everything with a low cost of living, great schools, and manageable traffic.

The successful candidate for this position will teach courses in health communication, as well as one of our concentration areas (Communication Management, Public Relations, Journalism, Media Production). Health Communication courses can include, but are not limited to, Health Campaigns, Health Communication, and Media and Health. Faculty typically have a 3/3 course load. In addition the candidate is expected to produce quality research, provide service to the discipline, department, and university, and advise undergraduate and graduate students.

Minimum Qualifications:

● Doctoral coursework and comprehensive exams completed in Communication, Media or related field;
● Teaching experience as instructor of record at the college or university level in at least two courses;
● Potential for scholarly research in health communication;

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

● PhD in Communication, Media or related field;
● Successful experience in one or more of the following:
  • working collaboratively with others (e.g., committee service, being part of a production team, co-teaching);
  • working independently (e.g., supervising a production, course development);
  • working collaboratively with others (e.g., committee service, research with multiple authors, co-teaching)
● Experience teaching undergraduate courses in health communication, health campaigns, or other health communication related courses;
● Record of scholarly publications related to health communication;
● Effective interpersonal communication skills;
● Effective oral communication skills;
● Effective classroom management skills;
● Commitment to breadth of education including education the whole person in the Marianist tradition and a commitment of service to the community, university and profession;

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Submit cover letter addressing all minimum and any preferred qualifications met, curriculum vitae, course evaluations for two classes where you were the instructor of record, sample syllabus of a course along with one sample assignment from that class; contact information for three professional references who can speak to your teaching ability (letters will be required, but requested at a later date), and a copy of graduate transcripts. If terminal degree is not complete, please submit a letter from the doctoral advisor indicating progress toward degree completion.

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide. With this development, the University will pause any enforcement action against employees who have not complied with the requirement to be fully vaccinated by Dec. 8, 2021 or to have requested an exemption to maintain their employment status.

The University will continue to monitor the state of the pandemic on campus and in the community as well as developments in federal and state requirements, and also will continue to regularly consult with public health officials and our medical panel.
