Assistant Professor Specializing in Media Production

Position Summary:

The University of Dayton Department of Communication invites applications for a tenure-track position specializing in Media Production at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 16, 2023.

The Department has a robust co-curricular program for media production students. Situated within Flyer Media, our student run media organization, is Flyer News, Flyer TV and Flyer Radio, all operated by students. Students within the program help broadcast 30 athletic events a year on ESPN+, as well as create Emmy-award winning long form documentaries. Each year students in the program travel to the NAB/BEA conference and also Los Angeles to network with alumni in the industry. In addition to Flyer Media, the CMM Department also hosts the annual Dayton Independent Film Festival, which is organized and operated by students. In addition, the city of Dayton has a burgeoning downtown area, 20 expansive metroparks, a bike share program, several historic neighborhoods, and the Dayton Aviation Heritage and National Historical Park. It is a great place for those who want a bit of everything with a low cost of living, great schools, and manageable traffic.

The successful candidate will teach courses in our Media Production sequence, including but not limited to, Basic Video Production, Audio Production, Multimedia Design, Scriptwriting, and Animation Effects. Faculty typically have a 3/3 course load. In addition, the candidate is expected to produce quality creative works or research, provide service to the discipline, department, and university, and advise undergraduate and graduate students.

Minimum Qualifications:

● All requirements for A Master of Fine Arts in media related field completed by May 31, 2023, or Doctoral coursework and comprehensive exams completed in Communication, Media Studies or related field;
● Experience in video production or documentary filmmaking;
● Teaching experience as either a TA or instructor of record at the college or university level in at least one course;
● Potential for scholarly research or juried artistic exhibition related to media production;
● Excellent written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

● Terminal degree in communication, media or related field completed;

● Successful experience in one or more of the following:

• working collaboratively with others (e.g., committee service, being part of a production team, co-teaching);
• working independently (e.g., supervising a production, course development);
• working collaboratively with others (e.g., committee service, research with multiple authors, co-teaching);
• teaching and working with individuals from socially and culturally diverse communities

● Producing, directing or working on documentary films
● Teaching undergraduate film and/or media production courses
● Creating effective media content
● Professional experience as a filmmaker or in media production
● Promoting, hosting and/or managing film festivals
● Record of participation in juried creative works;
● Effective interpersonal communication skills
● Effective oral communication skills
● Effective classroom management skills
● Commitment to breadth of education including education the whole person in the Marianist tradition and a commitment of service to the community, university and profession

If the doctoral degree or MFA is not complete, please submit a letter from the advisor indicating progress toward degree completion.

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide. With this development, the University will pause any enforcement action against employees who have not complied with the requirement to be fully vaccinated by Dec. 8, 2021 or to have requested an exemption to maintain their employment status.
