Job Description
The Office of Government & Community Relations at Virginia Tech works to promote and defend the priorities of the university with federal, state, and local governments. The Assistant/Associate Director of Federal Government Relations & Northern Virginia Community Relations will work closely with the Virginia Tech federal government relations team to advance and defend the priorities of the university in the federal government. The incumbent is also responsible for promoting Virginia Tech in the Northern Virginia communities and for representing Virginia Tech’s interest before Northern Virginia local governments. The incumbent will report directly to the Vice President and the position’s federal government relations activities also are guided by the Director of Government Relations.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree with government and/or community relations experience or experience working for an elected official or agency.
• Demonstrated ability to develop meaningful relationships with elected and community leaders.
• Proven writer.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to speak in front of large audiences and the ability to connect with members of a community in small and large meetings.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks at one time.
• Strong interpersonal skills and experience working and interacting with senior level managers within an organization and elected officials.
• Demonstrated ability and desire to work as part of a team.
• Proven experience addressing issues of a sensitive nature and ability to exercise discretion and good judgement as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree or law degree with government relations or government experience, or actively working on a higher degree.
• Demonstrated interest in higher education policy.
• Proficiency in Power Point.

The title of this position will be designated as Assistant Director or Associate Director based on the selected finalist’s qualifications. The salary offer will be commensurate with the qualifications of the selected finalist and position title.
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
