The Department of Music at St. Olaf College invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position in Voice at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2023. We seek an innovative and versatile vocalist with expertise in musical theater and contemporary commercial styles. The primary responsibility will be to teach voice performance studies to music majors in both professional and liberal arts degree programs and non-music majors.
In addition to performance studies instruction, the successful candidate will mentor undergraduate students academically and artistically. Responsibilities may include teaching music theater-related classes, contemporary styles voice class, working with the Lyric Stage productions, and assisting with the development of a Music Theater Major. All performance faculty share responsibilities in working together on performances, serving on department committees, advising students academically, and participating in student recruitment efforts. Additionally, the successful candidate may have the opportunity to teach in an interdisciplinary learning community and/or develop elective courses in music or in conjunction with colleagues in other departments of the college.
Minimum of Master of Music Degree in Performance, Musical Theater, or Vocal Pedagogy. The successful candidate will be a pedagogue and artist of outstanding ability who will contribute proactively to the artistic and intellectual life of St. Olaf College. In particular, the successful candidate will demonstrate, both in performance and in teaching, how excellent music making and a liberal arts education are mutually beneficial in the life of undergraduate students. In addition to a proven record of success in teaching voice and excellent performing ability, the candidate will show a commitment to the mission of both the department and college. The candidate should maintain a professional profile through professional performance and other activities. Keyboard skills sufficient to support instruction are required.
About the Department:
The St. Olaf Music Department is internationally recognized for its excellent ensembles, including two concert bands, seven choirs, two symphony orchestras, two jazz big bands, an improvisation ensemble, and a gamelan. Several of these ensembles travel the world, have earned the American Prize, and have been featured in Downbeat Magazine. Many of our students go on to the top graduate programs in the country for music performance, musicology, conducting, and composition. St. Olaf’s already established Lyric Theater and Theater Departments’ recent productions have included The Impresario, Die Fledermaus, Ruddigore, Songs for a New World, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Mamma Mia.
