The School of Human Ecology in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences invites applications and nominations for the position of Visiting Instructor of Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design.

Within this setting is the multi-disciplinary School of Human Ecology, which is an applied research and creative activity unit of over 20 faculty and staff serving over 700 undergraduate majors. The School offers programs in Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design, Human Development and Family Science, Interior Design, and Recreation. Students enrolled in the Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design Program can choose merchandising or design as their major concentration. Students use state of the art technology and gain hands-on experience in the apparel labs and through trips to Atlanta and New York, and complete internships in major cities around the nation including New York and Los Angeles. Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design is a dynamic program dedicated to student success.

Position Description. Reporting to the school chair, the visiting instructor position requires teaching fashion merchandising and apparel design lab classes, holding hold regular in person office hours, and participating in departmental meetings and activities. The position is an academic (10 month) non-tenure track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointments are for one year only, with the possibility of reappointment to a second year, based upon funding availability and satisfactory performance. The second year is a terminal year, without exception.

Required Qualifications:
  • Earned master's degree in merchandising or apparel design or a closely related field, including an MFA, with at least 18 graduate semester hours in courses related to merchandising or design by August 1, 2022.
  • Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
  • Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in merchandising or apparel design, or a closely related field.
  • Experience teaching college/university apparel lab courses
  • Full- or part-time experience in apparel industry practice

    Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.
  • All work (with limited exceptions such as research and study abroad and outside activities such as grading and email correspondence) for Georgia Southern University must be completed while the employee is physically present in the state of Georgia, unless specifically authorized by the university for a specific purpose and limited period of time within current policy.
  • Faculty are expected to contribute to the vibrant university community by engaging students, participating in events, and performing other responsibilities on-campus
  • Faculty may be required to teach, conduct research, or perform service duties on any of the three campuses. Georgia Southern provides accessible transportation options between campuses.
