The Dean is expected to be an outstanding educator, experienced leader, collaboratively minded,

The mission of the Governors State University College of Arts and Sciences is to provide an accessible, high-quality education to a diverse student body primarily from the Chicago area, while actively engaging in research and service to the community. We empower our students with the knowledge, skills and ethical perspectives needed to succeed in a technologically sophisticated global society.

The College of Arts and Sciences is organized into two divisions: the Division of Arts and Letters and the Division of Science Mathematics and Technology. There are currently 115 College faculty offering courses across a spectrum of fully accredited degree fields, as well as in the General Education program. The College of Arts and Sciences also houses the Center for Performing Arts, the Center for Community Media, the Visual Arts Center, and assists in leadership of the nationally acclaimed Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park. In April 2022, the University attained Arboretum status through the Chicago’s Morton Arboretum.

Essential Responsibilities

30% Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean oversees the
academic, personnel, financial, and administrative affairs. Will provide vision and
strategic direction to the educational, research, support, and service initiatives of the
College of Arts and Sciences.

20% The Dean is responsible for the implementation of all academic programs, including
strategic planning, quality assessment, and student and faculty recruitment.

10% The Dean will be the external face of the College, advocating on its behalf and
developing relationships across GSU and beyond. Establish external relationships to
further program development and recognition, expand the college’s resource base
through grants, contracts, and fundraising.

25% Supervise, evaluate, and develop faculty and staff in collaboration with division chairs.

10% Prepare and manage the college budget.

5% Maintain specific accreditations for the college’s programs.

Minimum Qualifications
Required Education and Experience

An earned Doctorate in one of the disciplines housed in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Eligibility for appointment as Full Professor in said discipline. Significant and successful leadership experience as Program Director/Coordinator, Chair or Dean, in a regionally accredited college or university, including the following:

• At least five years of progressive leadership experience at an accredited University in a field reflected in the Governors State University College of Arts and Sciences
• Budget development and fiscal responsibility
• Experience in creation and implementation of successful faculty development initiatives
• Experience in faculty and staff evaluation
• Experience in new program development and in programmatic assessment
• Experiences with institutional and programmatic accreditation processes
• Record of scholarly accomplishments appropriate to appointment as a full professor within an existing academic program
• Demonstrated experience in designing, implementing and sustaining academic programs and success initiatives appropriate for a diverse, multicultural environment, including traditional and non-traditional students
• Demonstrated commitment to and experience in leading DEi efforts in support of faculty, student, and staff recruitment and retention
• Demonstrated effectiveness as an advocate for faculty and students, and for quality teaching, research, scholarship, creative works and service

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

• Experience in a collective bargaining academic environment
• Experience with online and hybrid teaching and learning
• Experience collaborating with community members, advisory boards, and alumni
• A decision maker with a record collaboration, and a reputation for thoughtfulness, openness, fairness, and equity
• A strategic visionary with commitment to continuing the positive momentum of Governors State University
• Experience in grant writing, particularly in support of academic programs and/or student success
