Director of Advancement and External Relations Communications

University Communications and Marketing

JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Advancement and External Relations (ADVEX) Communications designs and executes internal and external strategic marketing and communications efforts to increase awareness of and private support for Adelphi University. This position develops, implements, and evaluates all marketing initiatives in support of the University's integrated brand strategy and goal to grow private support. This position will develop compelling cases for support; develop marketing and communications strategies for internal and external audiences; and identify targeted opportunities to cultivate pride and motivate investment in Adelphi University. To execute this work, this position will frequently collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including ADVEX staff, University Communications, donors and volunteers.

REPORTS TO: Chief Communications Officer, with a secondary reporting line to the Vice President of University Advancement and External Relations

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
  1. Develop and maintain targeted communications plans for ADVEX designed to inform internal and external audiences and drive philanthropy.
  2. Collaborate and support strategies of fundraising and stewardship across the ADVEX team that increase the effectiveness of their advancement work.
  3. Liaise and collaborate with campus constituencies to develop strategies that increase support for University initiatives and campaign priorities.
  4. Drive the development, execution, and/or promotion of gift announcements, case statements and impact stories.
  5. Create compelling and timely content for print and online publications including recognition of significant donors, prospects and volunteers.
  6. Work with ADVEX staff to write alumni profiles, stories, letters, and other donor correspondence.
  7. Write original proposals or edit and customize pre-existing proposals for prospects to include program and/or project budgets and supporting documentation.
  8. Create comprehensive project plans to oversee work from inception to delivery.
  9. Write, edit and evaluate fundraising and other marketing materials, both digital and traditional; act as project manager with content specialists, designers, fundraisers, and event planners to develop both small and large programs to engage supporters.
  10. With direction from the Vice President of University Advancement and External Relations, write effective speeches that align with the strategic priorities of the University and advance fundraising messages.
  11. Drive ADVEX social media communications; grow engagement across platforms and develop compelling messages to various audiences.
  12. Lead initiatives that build pride across campus for notable alumni, such as public displays of their work/contributions.
  13. Stay current with and introduce new marketing tactics when and where they can add value, such as viral marketing, new media, etc.
  14. Analyze the results of identified marketing communication efforts, making recommendations for increased effectiveness.
  15. Oversee qualitative and quantitative research projects required to develop communications plans for the next comprehensive campaign.
  16. Periodically oversee and administer surveys with key constituents that inform the strategic priorities of the unit.
  17. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

  15. A demonstrated portfolio of professional writing and publications.
  16. Experience in web-based content creation and management and working with social media.
  17. Ability to work effectively with a number of other staff members to accomplish institutional goals.
  18. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive relationships and actively contributes as a member of working teams to achieve results.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, public administration or equivalent is required.
  2. Minimum of five years of related experience is required.
  3. Higher education and experience in a fundraising unit is preferred.
  4. Experience with writing/editing within a non-profit setting is preferred.
  5. Experience using all major forms of marketing communication vehicles: advertising, electronic new media, web, email, direct mail, events, collateral, etc.
