The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business and technology of the State University of New York, invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Vice President for Student Success and Dean of Students.


JOB DESCRIPTION:

Through a strong partnership between Enrollment Management and Student Success, Academic Affairs, and the broader FIT community, the AVP/ Dean develops, implements and supports programs and services that result in an excellent student experience. Reporting to the Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Success, the AVP/Dean has responsibility for all student development functions including Athletics and Recreation, Counseling, Disability Support Services, Educational Opportunity Programs, Health Services, Residential Life, and Student Life. In addition, the AVP/Dean supports the Vice President in the overall management of the Division and provides leadership for projects significant to the campus, including student engagement programming, community standards, student crisis response and behavioral intervention, diversity and inclusion initiatives, veterans programming, and planning and assessment.

Essential Functions: 

  • Cultivates an environment of collaboration, inclusiveness, and respect where each student can develop and grow to their fullest potential.
  • Responsible for the leadership and development of comprehensive, innovative student development programs and services that results in high rates of student retention.
  • Supports student clubs and organizations that are effective, vibrant, and integral to the student experience. 
  • Promotes a a vibrant residential living environment that includes excellent health and wellness services.
  • Leads the FIT-ABLE program to provide supplemental support to students with disabilities.
  • Oversees Educational Opportunity Programs to ensure first generation college student success.
  • Collaborates with academic deans, vice presidents, and student organizations to address student concerns, campus safety, non-academic disciplinary issues, and campus life on a daily basis.
  • Works with faculty, staff, and students to provide a comprehensive learning environment that fosters intellectual, psychological, social, leadership, and recreational development for a diverse student population with a focus on retention strategies that are tailored to FIT's 2+2 model.
  • Reviews, develops, and implements policies consistent with institutional needs, professional guidelines, and related statutes.
  • Plans, develops, and manages departmental budgets, staff planning, and assessment of the effectiveness of the student experience.
  • Provides leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of student life policies such as student conduct, student residences, and alcohol and drug use. Oversees the annual development and production of the Student Rights & Responsibilities Policy Manual and other student-related documents.


REQUIREMENTS:

The Assistant Vice President will have a minimum of a Master's Degree in an appropriate academic discipline and at least 7 years of relevant experience in a higher education management/leadership role leading a multi-function unit. 

The successful candidate will have a successful record of management, budgeting, planning, and developing student programming, demonstrated experience in student affairs, thorough knowledge of current practices and theories in effective student affairs/development, outstanding writing and presentation skills, ability to make sound decisions, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to effectively handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, and most importantly, a strong commitment to student advocacy, quality service, inclusiveness, collaboration, and ensuring an optimal student experience.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Days/Hours: M-F, 9am-5pm, in person; work schedule subject to change based on needs of the department.
