Job Details

The Executive Director serves the Old Dominion University residential community by leading a comprehensive student experience supporting student success through engagement, learning, and well-being that contributes to academic success and career readiness. The position executes the role through the leadership and oversight of responsibilities including residential education, business operations, and administrative services.
The Executive Director is responsible for the leadership, vision, and strategic direction of the housing program and supervision of the staffing team to implement and manage the residential curriculum and experience, recruitment of residential students, operational management for a diverse population of 4,800 students, financial management and forecasting for a $30 million dollar operation, facility project management, and a summer conference services program. These responsibilities include the development and ongoing management of 10-year financial plans including, proposed student housing rate adjustments, operating and/or debt-financed new construction and renovations, and staffing needs. The position requires careful stewardship of all buildings, systems, and grounds in the housing inventory.
This position indirectly supervises a staff of approximately 26 fulltime professional staff and over 170 paraprofessional student staff. This position directly supervises the Director of Residence Education, Director of Business Operations, Director of Administrative Services, and a Senior Administrative Assistant.
The Executive Director leads and supports the integration of student experiences and residential experiences through staff recruitment and training, developing and maintaining campus and community partnerships, data driven decision-making, and facilitating change to support visionary and innovative impact for student success.
This position reports to the Associate Vice President for Learning in Student Engagement and Enrollment Services. This position is considered essential personnel and may be asked to serve during a university emergency or university closure event. 

Required Qualifications: Master’s degree in student personnel services, student development, higher education, or related degree required, or a bachelor’s degree with relevant experience equivalent to master’s degree. Considerable knowledge of and ability to create and implement programming to support learning outcomes which may include student development, well-being, academic success, and career readiness. Working knowledge of and experience with revenue and expenditure budget management, debt financing, and pro forma development. Working knowledge of and experience in facility management which may include construction planning, building operations, project management, and facility staff management. Working knowledge and experience implementing services to a diverse community while promoting equity and inclusion. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal. Ability to execute administrative, customer service, decision making and leadership functions within a complex organization. Ability to effectively utilize organizational skills to manage multiple complex priorities. Demonstrated ability to supervise multiple fulltime professional staff including hiring, training, and evaluating. An ability to function under a flexible work schedule that may include weekend and evening hours. Considerable experience contributing to a leadership vision and strategic direction for a complex organization. Significant progressive experience in staff supervision including hiring, training, and evaluating. Considerable experience with complex administrative processes, successful customer service delivery, and effective marketing strategies. Considerable experience working with a diverse group of students, staff, faculty, and external constituencies including parents and families. Some experience in implementing risk management strategies and crisis management. Some experience creating partnerships to advance goals of the organization.

Preferred Qualifications: Considerable experience leading a housing and residence life program at an institution of higher education.
