Department Summary

The mission of the EOP program is to provide access to higher education for historically low-income, underrepresented, disadvantaged students who have the potential to succeed at the university level. EOP recruits, retains and graduates students by providing a comprehensive program of support services which include admission, academic advisement, career and personal counseling, tutoring, financial assistance and graduate school information.

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the assistant director of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), the incumbent will provide comprehensive support services to a diverse student population including pre-admission advising, orientation, academic advising, personal and career counseling and financial aid guidance. The incumbent will be relied upon to provide insight, direction and recommendations to unique and sometimes sensitive issues, and is expected to independently and collaboratively resolve complex problems through the use of highly effective communication skills.

Incumbent will assist in various aspects of EOP student admissions including, but not limited to, outreach presentations and review of EOP applicant information for selection of EOP student cohorts. Reviews potential students transcripts, test scores, CSU eligibility index, recommendation letters and autobiographical information. This position represents California State University San Bernardino at off-campus/on-campus EOP events. The incumbent works collaboratively with area high schools and community colleges, and assists in attracting a diverse undergraduate student population. The incumbent advises and counsels current and prospective EOP students and their families/guardians on general CSU and specific admissions and other university policies and requirements. Provides EOP and university information to faculty, community colleges, high schools and community groups.

Incumbent will counsel EOP students in regards to academic progress and be proactive in providing interventions and making appropriate referrals to campus resources. The incumbent works collaboratively with college, department-based professional and faculty advisors to achieve graduation and retention goals. Provides EOP student services include general education, and educational planning in partnership with major academic advisor, undeclared advising, developmental progress monitoring and probation/disqualification, and appropriate referral to other academic support offices. The incumbent utilizes effective counseling techniques to assist students with sensitive issues pertaining to their personal and academic needs that impact their academic success.

The incumbent will serve as advisor to the EOP Alumni Chapter and annual alumni fundraising campaign. Incumbent will also be responsible for initiating, developing and collaborating with other constituents on EOP alumni efforts. . The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating the annual EOP Graduate Recognition Ceremony, develops and updates the EOP Graduate Reception Timeline, contacts potential donors and sponsors for the reception. Meets with appropriate offices on campus (i.e. Alumni Affairs, Records & Registration, Administrative Computing Services, Bookstore, Food Services, etc.) and local vendors for services and meets with EOP Director and/or Assistant Director weekly to report reception progress and for feedback. Verifies EOP student's graduation status.

The incumbent will be responsible for advertising, recording and maintaining EOP scholarships records. The incumbent will also be responsible for assisting in the coordination of the Summer Bridge counseling, service learning, and student development components and serve as a Summer Bridge counselor during the EOP Summer Bridge Program. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for collecting, organizing, creating and submitting semester and/or annual reports summarizing efforts that include data and recommendations and any other ad hoc reports requested by EOP Assistant Director and EOP Director.

Employment Status: Full-time, Exempt, Probationary with the possibility of converting to permanent.

Work Schedule
  • Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some evenings and weekend hours may be required.

  • Ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature.
  • Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions, and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
  • Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals to include faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, and other private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.

Education and Experience
  • Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
    • A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • Class C Driver's License and Insurance.

  • Preferred Qualifications
    • A Master's degree is desired.
    • Other skills include excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
    • Knowledge of professional counseling theories and techniques is preferred.
    • Applicants must have experience in collecting, analyzing and evaluating data, as well as making verbal and written presentations regarding their assessment of the data collected.
    • Experience with EOP, TRIO or coordinating summer student programs is preferred.
    • Experience with higher education academic policies and procedures.
    • Upper division or graduate course work in individual and group counseling, career counseling and conflict resolution is preferred. Knowledge in how to operate standard office equipment and software including PeopleSoft, Microsoft Office (Access, PowerPoint, Excel and Word) and database management.
    • Experience in fundraising, event planning, training is preferred as these are considered specialized skills.
    • Working knowledge or experience in relaying university degree requirements including major and general education coursework and developing educational plans.
    • Knowledge of and strict adherence to one of the nationally recognized counselor code of ethics/ethical standards, such as the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), American Counseling Association (ACA), or the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the Core Values of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). Adaptability and aptitude for solution-oriented problem solving that promotes student success.
    • Ability to write clear and concise reports, along with the ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters; troubleshoot problems; the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with diverse constituencies including administrators, faculty, parents, staff, students and community members; and the ability to motivate students in a diverse multicultural setting. Incumbent will need to be able to handle sensitive and confidential information with diplomacy and discretion.

    Salary

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,700 per month

    Classification Salary Range: $4,691 - $6,683 per month
