Job Description

The UMKC School of Dentistry is seeking a patient-focused Patient Accounts Representative who is team-oriented and known for their outstanding customer service, attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to take initiative. Daily work includes researching patient problems, and accurately processing a high volume of transactions for a diverse customer base, therefore problem-solving, flexibility, and multitasking skills are important. The ideal candidate must be able to perform job tasks in a busy environment with frequent interruptions, while meeting deadlines and producing high-quality work. Successful applicants must be helpful and patient, with the ability to problem solve in fast-paced situations, and provide outstanding customer service to patients, faculty, staff, and students. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Patient Accounts Representative
  • Compute and record totals of transactions
  • Count money in cash drawers to ensure that amounts are correct and that there is adequate change
  • Greet customers, issue receipts, refunds, credits or change due to customers and explain benefit coverage to patient.
  • Receive payment by cash, check, credit cards or automatic debits
  • Keep a balance sheet of amounts and numbers of transactions

Dental Insurance Claims
  • Verify insurance coverage; compute patient benefits and compile itemized bills.
  • Answer patient questions regarding billing statements and insurance coverage.
  • Telephone, write or fax insurance companies with unpaid insurance claims to obtain settlement of claim.
  • Prepare forms outlining dental expenses for governmental, welfare and other agencies paying for specified patients.
  • Record insurance payments and close out file when paid in full. Prepare unpaid claims for transfer to collection agenciess
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least 5 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous patient accounts, and/or health care billing experience
  • Previous cashiering experience/ ability to count correct change
Full Time/Part Time
