Job Description:
Teach geology courses at the 100- to 300-level, including large enrollment courses, and directly supervised labs.

  • A typical faculty workload responsibility may include up to twenty four (24) credits of instruction per academic year.



  • The successful candidate may need to teach in other areas as assigned and qualified.

  • May be expected to develop and deliver face-to-face, hybrid, and on-line instruction at the Mankato campus, online, and/or at the university's additional locations, as assigned.

  • The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues in curriculum design, instruction and evaluation, conduct research productively and mentor students in research, help create innovative strategies for student recruitment, retention, and completion, and may be expected to develop external grant funding opportunities.

  • All faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly or creative activity or research, in continuing preparation and study, in contributing to student growth and development, and in providing service to the university and community (See Article 22 and Appendix G of the IFO Master Agreement).

  • The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in Geology.



Required Qualifications:
  • Doctorate or terminal degree in Geology or closely related field; OR M.S. in Geology or closely related field, plus substantial progress towards terminal degree (ABD).



  • Demonstrated ability to teach introductory geology courses.

  • Ability to teach at least two of the following core courses in the geology curriculum: Structural Geology, Petrology, Mineralogy, Sedimentology and Stratigraphy.

  • Ability to engage undergraduates in research.

  • Ability to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the geosciences.

  • Demonstrated ability to serve a diverse population and apply an equity lens to this position including social justice and/or anti-racism.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.



  • Demonstrated effective written, oral communication and/or presentation skills.

  • Ability to utilize existing laboratory instrumentation and equipment, including X-ray diffractometer, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, scanning-electron microscope, and rock sample preparation equipment.

  • Experience in geophysics.

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching college or university-level classes.

  • Record of successful contributions to student growth and development.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with faculty and staff in a collegial and cooperative manner.

  • Have or potential to involve undergraduate and/or graduate students in research or creative activity.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:This position, sponsored by the University Teacher-Scholar Diversity Postdoctoral Program, is a full-time, one-year fixed term position, renewable for up to three years in total.The goal of the Teacher-Scholar Diversity Postdoctoral Program is to provide meaningful preparation for a tenure-track career in higher education.The successful candidate will be provided with laboratory space, competitive salary and benefits, and a stipend to support conference travel and or research, as well as access to additional professional development opportunities offered by the university.The successful candidate will benefit from the support of a diverse team of mentors including close colleagues, faculty and staff from across the university, and university administrators.
The Minnesota State University, Mankato Geology program has three full-time faculty members, and is a component of the Department of Biochemistry, Chemistry, and Geology. The Geology program offers a bachelor’s degree Geology, a bachelor’s degree in Earth Science Teaching, a certificate in Environmental Geology, and serves additional majors including Education, Civil Engineering, and Construction Management.The Department of Biochemistry, Chemistry, and Geology also offers bachelor’s degrees in Biochemistry, Chemistry (including an ACS approved degree), and Chemistry Teaching. The department is housed in Ford Hall, which opened in 2008, and features modern research and teaching laboratories, and direct access to instrumentation.
