Job Description:
The Assistant Director provides leadership and direction for the University Advising Center (UAC) serving the advising needs of undergraduate students. The position is an active member of University Advising's Leadership Team. The UAC serves students from across the university including students in transition, students that are undecided on a program of study, and students in need of intensive advising support. The UAC serves as the University's advising hub for “just in time” services. The Assistant Director is responsible for monitoring and developing the advising capacity of the UAC through advising initiatives, evaluation of services, and continuous improvement. The Assistant Director maintains a caseload of students and provides student advising support to other professionals as complex situations require. The Assistant Director works closely with the Director of University Advising and is member of the University Advising Leadership Team, providing feedback and consultation on academic advising related policies, practices, and procedures. The Assistant Director offers broad expertise and knowledge about the university's academic programs, university academic policy and procedures, advising tools, and
campus resources and referral processes.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree (conferred by the time of hire) and three (3) years of academic advising and/or student support experience in higher education.



  • Demonstrated commitment to students with diverse backgrounds including, but not limited to, students of color, LGBTQ+ students, first generation students, students with disabilities, and/or international students.

  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.

  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced academic advising experience, demonstrating understanding of student development theory and different advising models.



  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting students and their success.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills with demonstrated abilities to communicate effectively with many different constituents - including students, faculty, staff, administrators.

  • Evidence of successful experience working with a wide variety of student support services.

  • Ability to interpret and implement University academic policies related to student academic standing, progression and completion.

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Demonstrated experience supervising and developing academic advisors.

  • Demonstrated ability for capacity development in a center-setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new information and interpret it with
    attention to detail and accuracy.


Other Requirements:
Work safely at all times, which includes but is not limited to, participating and completing all required safety trainings, as well as performing all job tasks in accordance with Minnesota State University, Mankato policies and procedures utilizing appropriate tools, equipment and personal protective equipment.

Based upon this position’s essential functions, it reports to an on-campus location, five days a week and does not have the option of telework. Telework is at the discretion of management, and defined and implemented in accordance with HR/LR Policy #1422.

Occasional evening and weekend work will be required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Provide leadership, development and oversight of the University Advising Center (UAC) (coordination of advising services for students in transition, students that are undecided on a program of study, and students in need of intensive advising support; daily direction, work-process development and supervision to UAC professional advisors, leading a center that prioritizes meaningful support and demonstrated care for students in general, and the specific student populations the UAC serves routinely; ongoing professional development and
training on university policies and procedures, university resources and appropriate referral processes, advising technological tools and best practices, our diverse student populations, their development and needs, and resources that can assist them; active work with UAC advisors to identify, evaluate, and address student advising challenges and complex student situations; development of individual advisor’s strengths, areas of growth, unique skills and talents, assisting in the development of their professional goals and achievement of these; information and understanding about best practices in advising so that the UAC achieves its mission to effectively serve students in transition and in need of additional support for success; a data-informed approach to strategically plan and achieve student success advising outcomes in the UAC; frequent collaboration with the advising coordinator and director of University Advising to ensure that the UAC is serving students effectively); * Provide direct student services through advising of students that are in transition, students that are undecided on a program of study, and students in need
of intensive advising support. Provide “just in time” advising services for students in need. Oversee and intercede as needed in providing complex and sensitive case management on behalf of the UAC. * Support the ongoing development of the University Advising Center by actively serving as a “test site” for implementation of new advising tools and strategies when appropriate; developing and implementing advising initiatives, continuous improvement, and procedural changes designed to improve the advising capacity in the UAC. * Manage orientation and registration events for new, transfer, and international students who come to the university undecided about their majors. This includes coordination of presentations at orientation sessions, hands-on direction with registration, individual/small group appointments, development of orientation materials for students and for faculty assisting with orientation, as well as problem-solving and consultation in issues of course availability and student special needs. Work closely with student support programs across the university (i.e. Maverick Success Program and Learning Communities) to create a positive entry into the University for new and returning students. * Create and maintain active partnerships with other campus constituents to ensure coordinated support and communication between UAC and partner-offices. This includes frequent engagement with campus partners; facilitating effective student referral processes; identifying student barriers and developing strategies for removing these; providing holistic student support in partnership with constituents. Campus constituents include offices such as University Advising peers in college/school advising centers; Diversity, Equity & Inclusion; TRIO; Center for Academic Success’ Accessibility Resources; Kearney International Center; Student Financial Services; New Student & Family Programs; Career Development Center; Counseling Center; Learning Communities; Registration & Academic Records; Associate Vice President of Undergraduate Education; Admissions.
