  • JOB SUMMARY

    Under the direction and supervision of the Dean of Student Development and EOPS, the Guardian Scholars Counselor/Coordinator will provide a wide range of program coordination, counseling, and retention services to support foster youth, and other at-risk student populations. Develop and implement student success strategies that achieve equity for Foster Youth also referred to as Youth in Care. Perform core counseling functions: academic, career, and personal counseling as well as crisis intervention, outreach, college governance participation, program review and research, research counseling program and services best practices, training and professional development and other duties as assigned. May work a flexible schedule that may include summer, evening, weekend, on- and off-campus assignments.

    GENERAL RESPONSIBILITES:

    The Guardian Scholars Counselor/Coordinator is responsible for providing and coordinating delivery of core services which will occur both on-campus and off-campus in multiple ways: in-person, on-line/virtual, individual and group meetings, workshops, and other innovative ways. Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Conduct recruitment activities and assist foster youth with matriculating into the college.
  • Assist students in clarifying academic goals and selecting a major and establishing/maintaining enrollment priority.
  • Establish a rapport with students; monitor and track students' academic progress to ensure attainment of educational goal.
  • maintain contact with students throughout their enrollment; and use an early alert system to ensure student persistence and success.
  • Take students to career, leadership and enrichment events and conferences and
  • invite speakers to discuss career and transfer options with students.
  • In collaboration with the college administration, EOPS and other counselors, develop effective retention interventions to reduce the achievement gap for Foster Youth.
  • Address the counseling and advising needs of academically underprepared students; Prepare multi-year academic plans for graduation and transfer.
  • Serve as a liaison with other areas i.e., Disabled Student Services, Psychological Services and General Counseling.
  • Provide orientation, career, transfer, discipline-related, student success (study skills, time management, academic probation) workshops.
  • Provide staff development and in-service training for teaching, coaching, and counseling faculty to educate the campus community about foster youth.
  • Participate in college and division assignments and other departmental responsibilities.
  • May teach certain counseling related courses (Introduction to College, Career Life Planning, Life Skills in Higher Education) designed specifically for Foster Youth.
  • Serve as a liaison and network with on-campus and off-campus programs, social services agencies, and community-based organizations to address students' educational, mental/physical health, and basic needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

    EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

    Ability to:
  • Coordinate a comprehensive student support services program for underserved students, who have experiences barriers to pursuing a college degree.
  • Serve as a liaison and network with on and off campus programs and agencies that provide services to Foster Youth.
  • Develop and provide trainings for faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and facilitation skills both in-person and online/virtually.
  • Complete data and complete reports on the status of students served by the Guardian Scholars Program.
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines, simultaneously.
  • Work with students who have been impacted by trauma and abuse.

  • Experience/Knowledge of:
  • Knowledge of Trauma Informed Care (TIC) practices and experience providing counseling services and conducting follow-up for and Foster Youth and at-risk student populations utilizing TIC Skills.
  • Experiencing developing and conducting academic and personal development opportunities and activities specific to the needs of foster youth.
  • Knowledge of foster care policies and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the various on and off campus programs and services from which Foster Youth students can receive assistance.
  • Knowledge of the challenges and obstacles faced by Foster Youth in pursuing their educational goals.
  • Experience assisting Foster Youth in transitioning from the foster care system to a college setting.
  • Knowledge of and the skills to provide services to multiethnic, and underrepresented students.
  • Knowledge of and experience with computers, software, and technology related to counseling.
  • Knowledge of and experience in establishing and maintaining linkages with instructional divisions and special programs.
  • Knowledge of and experience in consensus building within a diverse educational environment.

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, cultural, disability, religious background and sexual orientation of community college students.
  • Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling from an accredited college or university OR Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees AND a California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT).

  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience coordinating student support programs serving ethnically diverse and low-income student populations
  • Community college experience.
  • Experience counseling Foster Youth and other underserved, at-risk student populations.
  • Experience with State/Federal reporting guidelines.
  • Knowledge of available career resources focused on foster youth in the bay area.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with public agencies and community-based organizations.
  • Understanding of Trauma Informed Care (TIC) strategies for working with students.
  • Coursework or training related to cross-cultural perspectives, equity-mindedness, and social justice.
  • Ability and willingness to work with underrepresented student groups, students who place into Basic Skills courses, students interested in career and technical education courses and careers.

    HIRING RANGE: $66,539.00 - $109,280.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, Tenure-track, 11-months per year
