License/Certification Required
The U.S. Federal regulations require DSOs and AROs to hold a U.S. citizenship or permanent residence. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The International Student and Scholar Services & Outreach unit within the Office of International Education and Development ( OIED ) provides immigration support to international students and scholars as well cultural programming. OIED is part of Academic Affairs.

The Assistant Director of ISSSO is responsible for the full range of duties associated with supporting international students and scholars. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Serve as a Designated School Official ( DSO ) for the F visa program and as an Alternate Responsible Officer ( ARO ) for the J visa program (the U.S. Federal regulations require AROs to hold U.S. citizenship); and maintain SEVIS accordingly

  • Advise F and J international students and scholars on academic, cultural, financial, and social matters, as well as maintaining legal status in the U.S.; assist them in understanding complex university and immigration policies and procedures

  • Maintain a NAFSA membership and keep up to date with changes to F and J regulations, trends, and best practices in the field of International Education

  • Use Terra Dotta software to ensure Appalachian's compliance with F and J regulations and to manage international student caseload

  • Maintain a working knowledge of employment-based visas (H-1B and the Permanent Residency) process and assist the Director of ISSSO with these filings

  • Assist with the implementation of ISSSO events and support services, including a comprehensive international student orientation program and farewell reception each semester, and tax assistance on an annual basis

  • Oversee the unit's international outreach programs, including the International Friendship Program and Cultural Ambassador; identify, develop and implement other student and scholar support programs in coordination with the ISSSO unit team members

  • Supervise a graduate assistant in the coordination of two outreach programs: the International Friendship Program and Cultural Ambassadors

  • Coordinate the campus annual International Education Week celebration

  • Collaborate with a range of campus partners, such as Campus Safety, Student Employment, Health Services, Advising and Orientation, Student Accounts, Food Services, University Housing, Community-Engaged Leadership, Athletics Office, Admissions, Counseling Center, Career Development Center, Intercultural Student Affairs, academic departments, among others, to increase campus partners' knowledge of the international population and ensure that the unique needs of international students are met

  • Serve on campus committees to represent international student and scholar needs and interests

  • Serve as a member of the International Recruitment Working Group

  • Maintain the ISSSO Web pages and departmental electronic communication campaigns

  • Assist the Director in managing the Appalachian apartments for international scholars

  • Assist the Director in yearly planning, budget process, and preparation of annual reports and other duties as assigned.

Suggested Salary Range $45,000 - $50,000 Physical Demands of Position
