Position Description Summary/Purpose :

Goodwin University is seeking a Part-Time College Counselor for a nine month (September 2022 to May 2023) for up to 15 hours a week. The Goodwin Collegiate Prep (ConnCAP) program provides academic support to students in 10th 12th attending Hartford Public Schools with the goal of entry to post-secondary education. The successful candidate will be responsible for admissions counseling, monitoring students' application progress, workshop development and facilitation, along with additional planning and programmatic duties.

This position is funded by the Office of Higher Education and is currently in year two of a three-year grant with continued renewal based on available funding and program performance. This position has the potential for growth in the form of transitioning into a full-time position upon the progression of the program with an adjustment in salary.

Essential Job Functions/Primary Responsibilities :

  • Create, plan, and facilitate workshops on topics associated with the college admissions process including, creating a college list, completing applications, essay writing, and financial aid.
  • Assist students in all aspects of the college application process, application preparation, essay development, and preparation for early admissions or/and regular admissions deadlines.
  • Provide guidance in creating personal college planning schedules to aid students during the application year, including deadlines for standardized tests and college application due dates.
  • Use data-driven metrics to identify college matches for students.
  • Provide interview practice and techniques in the form of mock interviews, identifying and practicing with different styles of interviewing, and how to manage them.
  • Provide case management and document students' services, track retention, graduation, and postsecondary progress.
  • Commit to facilitating weekly workshops (Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30) with some weekends and travel required.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill :
  • Experience working with diverse student populations
  • Familiarity with the college counseling process and its requirements
  • Technical knowledge with Google Docs, Google Drive, Zoom or similar services required.
  • Strong project management abilities
  • Confidence, resourcefulness, accountability, and a high degree of integrity and ethics.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Education, Training and Experience :
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a related field
  • Two to three years of direct experience in an undergraduate admissions office or as a school counselor.
Special Requirements :
  • Valid Driver’s License and own insured vehicle
