Title: Academic Technology Consultant - Digital Media Technologies





Position Purpose:

Curricular and Research Computing (CRC) provides programs and services that help the faculty and students easily and effectively use information technology in their teaching, learning and research. CRC staff routinely consult and collaborate with faculty on a range of resources from using the college’s course and content management systems to creating media rich curricular content to developing computational and digital projects in support of teaching and scholarship.

The position involves collaboration with staff and faculty across ILS and the College to ensure the provision of computing services and resources in support of the academic mission of the College.



Job Duties:
  • Provides hands-on services and support to faculty, students and relevant support staff in the appropriate use of 2D media technology to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Actively pursues knowledge of information technology applications appropriate to a liberal arts setting and collaborates with faculty and students on evaluating and supporting established as well as newly emerging technologies.
  • Promote and support digital media production in teaching, learning and research through the full digital media development cycle (pre-production, production, post-production, delivery)
  • Take the lead in promoting and supporting audio projects (including but not limited to podcasts) in support of teaching and scholarship.
  • Contributes to the provision of CRC services, especially by providing printing and photography support at the Bates Digital Media Studios (DMS).
  • Manage and maintain CRC’s specialized printers (especially in support of curricular and capstone projects in the department of Art and Visual Culture).
  • Contribute to the programming and day-to-day operation of the Digital Media Studios
  • Administer and maintain the DMS’s inventory system (currently Connect2)
  • Works in coordination with other academic technology service points (including the VizLab and the Language Resource Center) to provide a unified strategy for academic computational support.
Additional Job Functions :
  • Coordinates and promotes services of DMS with other campus academic support services
  • Contribute to the support of systems critical to campus teaching and learning initiatives, including the learning management (Moodle), video publishing platform (Kaltura) and content management (WordPress)
  • Support studio photography, including portraiture, 2-D and 3-D reproductions for museums and archives
  • Contributes to the support of cross-curricular projects in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences that involve digital media
  • Participates in technology instruction programs for faculty, staff and students
  • Purchase, manage, maintain, and arrange repair for the A/V equipment in the DMX
  • Actively pursues professional development (by attending and presenting at regional and national workshops and conferences)
  • Other duties (including serving on departmental and campus working groups and committees) as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education
  • Undergraduate degree (BA/BS/BFA) in relevant field (or equivalent experience)
Experience
  • 2 to 4 years of demonstrable professional experience in multimedia production and comprehensive knowledge of the fundamentals and techniques of video and audio post-production (editing and delivery).
  • Experience staffing and managing the day-to-day operation of a user-focused computing facility desirable
  • Experience with digital animation desirable.
  • Experience as an instructor or teacher of multimedia production desirable.

  • Advanced knowledge of media formats, compression standards, codecs and delivery formats.
