The School of Pharmacy’s Department of Medicinal Chemistry invites you apply for our Staff Scientist position. This position will be in the area of Computational and Analytical Chemistry with emphasis on structural biology and drug discovery. This is a full-time 12-month staff position with a term of three years. The successful candidate will participate in research (~60%) and teaching (~40%) related to computational chemistry, physical chemistry and/or analytical chemistry. Research and teaching experience in these areas as related to drug design and discovery is highly desirable, and preference will be given to those candidates with a track record in collaborating with multidisciplinary teams of chemists, structural biologists and/or cell biologists.

The successful candidate will have an opportunity to collaborate with members of the Medicinal Chemistry department and the broader VCU community. This may include, as needed, roles in extramurally funded research that are currently in progress. If desirous, the successful candidate will be supported and mentored in developing an independent research program with the possibility of extramural funding. Applicants must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Chemistry (computational, physical, analytical, etc.), Structural Biology, or a related field. The successful candidate should have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member. The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses in aforementioned areas or other areas of interest to the department and/or the candidate. This position is limited to a 3-year limited term.

General Duties:

Partnering with students (undergraduate and graduate) as well as faculty in the execution of existing research initiatives by supporting experimental design, implementation, and analysis.
Aiding the identification, evaluation, and development (e.g. from brainstorming to proposal preparation) of new research horizons across the focus areas of the group.
Maintain leading edge knowledge of current methods and technologies related to computational, physical and analytical chemistry.
Delivering results in a fast-paced time sensitive environment.
Supervising and maintaining the day-to-day operation of the equipment and infrastructure within the purview of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry including new user training, equipment scheduling, the construction of new custom experimental test stands, compliance with University/State/Federal safety standards, the strategic acquisition of new equipment, managing lab inventory, ordering, and receiving.
Developing standard operating procedures and safety protocols for various systems including maintaining trained user databases and electronic access through university systems.
Developing and teaching computational, physical and analytical chemistry lectures in graduate and/or undergraduate programs.

Minimum Hiring Standards:

Ph.D. in computational, physical and/or analytical chemistry, or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience that equates to a Ph.D.
Publications in internationally recognized scientific journals in the areas related to computational, physical and/or analytical chemistry
Ability to work collaboratively with research teams to better assist them in accomplishing their goals
Strong communication skills, and ability to convey highly technical concepts to a non-technical audience

Preferred Hiring Standards:

Experience with teaching undergraduates and/or graduates in computational, physical and/or analytical chemistry areas
Hands-on research experience in the areas of computational, physical and/or analytical chemistry
Research and teaching experience in the areas of computational, physical and/or analytical chemistry as related to structural biology and drug design

Salary Range: $60,000-$80,000
