Job Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research and receiving work lead direction from the College of Science (CoS), Chemical Safety Officer, the Chemical Safety Coordinator works independently under general supervision to achieve specified outcomes. This position provides support to the hazardous waste collection operations for the College of Science. The Chemical Safety Coordinator is responsible for aiding in the preparation, maintenance, distribution, storage/inventory, and quality assurance of chemicals, chemical reagents, chemical solutions and related materials for the biology laboratories. Will support the College Safety Officer in various State and Federal inspections to ensure the College remains in compliance with current safety regulations. The incumbent is an active member of the CoS Emergency Safety Team and will assist the Safety Team in the event of an emergency. Supports the implementation of College Safety Programs and gas cylinder inventory management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Works closely with the CoS safety officer to ensure chemical safety procedures are documented and implemented
  • Assists with the chemical safety training of CoS personnel
  • Coordinates chemical waste disposal operations for College of Science teaching and research labs
  • Performs inspections of all College of Science teaching & research labs to address potential problems with chemical waste
  • Advises and supports College of Science technicians in handling & disposal of teaching lab chemical waste
  • Supports research faculty and students in facilitating waste disposal for College of Science research labs
  • Accurately calculate containment bottles for chemical composition and concentration for processing
  • Functions as a liaison between the College of Science & the Environmental Health & Occupational Safety Department concerning chemical waste
  • Supports the Safety Coordinator in chemical inventory and gas cylinder maintenance
  • Performs fume hood and flow rate diagnostics
  • Maintains the Biology Department chemical preparation facility
  • Responsible for modifying purchased chemicals into specific chemical reagents used in Biology Department teaching and research laboratories
  • Evaluates the quality and shelf life of purchased chemicals and ensures that they are properly stored
  • Operates and performs routine maintenance on a high purity water generation system for the Biology Department
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge and expertise to ensure that a variety of complex chemical reagents perform adequately and meet minimum quality standards. Equipment such as precision analytical glassware, a pH meter, and a water purification system are routinely used and maintained
  • Ability to operate technical equipment related to the discipline
  • Knowledge of the principles of performing support services
  • Experience with chemical waste handling and the paperwork involved
  • Laboratory experience in "wet chemistry" is essential to deal with the wide variety of reagents needed in a diversity of College teaching labs. Understanding of and experience with buffers, electrophoresis reagents, and other biotech support reagents and techniques is essential
  • Ability to evaluate the condition of the equipment used to prepare the reagents and to perform routine maintenance on the equipment as needed
  • Knowledge of "Sterile Technique" is desirable but not essential
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, procedures and practices; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling
  • Ability to maintain and improve inventory reports, experimental protocols and documentation mandated by regulatory requirements
  • Working knowledge of software applications: word processing, spreadsheet, database management
  • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment and to continually assess the specific requirements of a variety of experimental protocols to efficiently provide the needed accuracy and quality for each material
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities
  • Organize and plan work and projects within the scheduling demands and requirements of major College departments, while providing consistent waste management support for all College departments
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies
Required Qualifications
  • Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned. A combination of education and experience will be considered
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or a related study, from an Accredited University, is required
  • Experience with chemical safety in a laboratory environment
  • Experience preparing chemical reagents at specific concentrations, volumes, and pH, from purchased raw chemicals
  • Experience using basic scientific equipment such as pH meters, top loading and analytical balances (both analog and digital), drying ovens, and glassware washers
  • Basic understanding of Organic chemical instrumentation such as: Gas Chromatography, Infrared Spectroscopy, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance
  • Experience using scientific techniques in the Organic Chemistry laboratory such as: distillation, recrystallization, thin layer chromatography, and melting point determination
  • Providing chemical laboratory support in an academic and/or research environment


Compensation

Classification: Instructional Support Technician II
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,418/month - $4,558/month
CSU Salary Range: $3,907/month - $6,779/month
