Job Summary
The individual selected for this position will provide professional research assistance with ongoing aquaponics programs at the E. W. Shell Fisheries Center, School of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences, Auburn University. The employee will help develop and implement large-scale aquaponics projects primarily dealing with the fish side of the research and will be the primary person who assists with planning, coordinating, maintaining, and executing studies as well as maintaining research files and summarizing the data.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
1) Planning and Implementation- Develops and implements research project and protocols for researchers that integrated, nutrition, production practices, nutrient loading of culture systems and health. This includes monitoring of animals and research systems.
2) Operations coordination- Assists in the prioritization of fish production goals to meet the needs of researchers and demonstration faculty/staff from multiple departments. Manages and adjusts resources to ensure proper fish husbandry and production goals are met. Monitors for fish health and implements husbandry protocols.
3) Equipment/supplies management- Manages, prepares, and maintains equipment, materials, and labor in support of faculty and facility needs (including research and production equipment); Organization and accounting for expansive inventory.
4) Development of publications relevant to research and outreach of projects; assists with the development of reports and new proposals.
5) Compliance- Ensures compliance with animal care and chemical and maintains suitable records to meet regulatory and safety requirements; Manages chemical inventory, storage, and disposal.
6) Data management- Maintain and manage experimental data, protocols and records.

Master's degree from an accredited institution

Fisheries, Aquaculture, Zoology, Biological Sciences, or closely related field.

Research Associate II: Master’s degree in Fisheries, Aquaculture, or closely related field and 2 years of experience in research practices and protocols relevant to the position.
Research Associate III : Master’s degree in Fisheries, Aquaculture, or closely related field and 4 years of experience in research practices and protocols relevant to the position.
Research Associate IV: Master’s degree in Fisheries, Aquaculture, or closely related field and 6 years of experience in research practices and protocols relevant to the position.

Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills; ability to work in a group environment, moderate to advanced knowledge in the field of fisheries/aquaculture research and broad knowledge of associated equipment, materials, and processes; moderate knowledge of complex aquaculture processes such as fish spawning and husbandry, disease diagnostics, observation, documentation, data collection and analysis.
Minimum Technology Skills
Computer skills in using programs such as Microsoft Office, Excel, etc.; Ability to work with statistical analysis software ( SAS ) and reference management tools (Endnote) as well as on line data and task management (sharepoint) tools; familiarity/experience with a variety of water quality instruments and general farm equipment and tools.
