The Native American Student Program Coordinator develops a recruitment and retention program aimed at increasing the overall enrollment and persistence of Native American students; provides direct service to all prospective and current Native American students by assisting them with issues which affect college success, including housing, admission and placement, acculturation, advising, and retention; and liaison with campus community.

Terms of Employment:
  • This is typically a .75 FTE 11-month exempt position at pay level 23 in the Administrative salary schedule. Piloting an additional .25 FTE for three years, then will evaluate.
  • Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district.
  • Requires the provision of official transcripts upon hire.
  • COCC employees must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.

  • Effective Monday, April 18, 2022, COCC implemented a COVID -19 vaccination requirement for all employees, including benefited employees, part-time faculty, and temporary workers such as irregular wage, work study and community education. Upon hire, new employees will receive an email with instructions outlining how to upload proof of full COVID -19 vaccination or request a medical or religious exception.
Essential Functions:
Program Support and Development:
  1. In collaboration with Admissions and Records and the Director of Diversity and Inclusion, design and implement a recruitment plan for Native American students, both within and outside the COCC service district. Participate in College recruitment activities, both on and off-campus.
  2. Assist with the collection of data, evaluation of effectiveness of programs and services and preparation of reports and surveys concerning Native American populations. Assist with performing ongoing assessments to ensure that program goals and objectives are met.
  3. Develop relationships with local Native American community organizations and, as appropriate, partner with them to further the educational goals of students.
  4. In collaboration with the Director of Diversity and Inclusion, maintain and manage the Native American program budget and other administrative processes in a timely manner.


Student Support:
  1. Develop and implement a retention plan for Native American students, including activities and events focused on academic success, personal skill development and goal attainment.
  2. Advocate for and advise prospective and current Native American students with regards to COCC admissions, academics, financial aid, personal and other pertinent issues.
  3. Develop, coordinate and implement activities and events that will facilitate participation and cultural awareness across the COCC campus community and the college’s service district.
  4. Advise the Native American Student Club and/or other Native American cultural groups.

General Duties:
  1. Serve on College committees.
  2. Provide information and, under the guidance of the Director of Diversity and Inclusion, training for the College on the needs, concerns, and cultural backgrounds of Native American students within the District.
  3. Work with the appropriate College personnel to write proposals for program funds.
  4. Perform other essential functions as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.   1. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of multicultural issues on a college campus.
  2. Demonstrated experience recruiting, advising, mentoring, and retaining students from Native American populations. Knowledge and skill in communicating and working effectively within Native American communities. Demonstrated understanding of the developmental needs of Native American students attending college.
  3. Experience in planning and implementing social and educational programs for students.
  4. Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines, set work priorities, and manage workload.
  5. Excellent communication skills and ability to manage conflicts within and/or between groups. Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds.
  6. Ability to manage budgets and other administrative processes in a timely and professional manner.
  7. Ability to interpret College enrollment policies and explain rationale behind policies for prospective and current students, ensuring their understanding of expectations and requirements.
  8. Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.
  9. Ability to work independently with the context of a team environment.
Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:
Regular office hours are established between 8 am – 5 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities. Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods. Requires to write, read written materials and computer screens, and ability to use telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs.
