Auburn Veterinary Specialists – Gulf Shores seeks candidates for a Veterinary Technician position to perform various tasks related to the care and treatment of animal patients. This position assists in the monitoring and treatment of all patients admitted to the hospital.

Auburn Veterinary Specialists is the centerpiece of a 24,000-square-foot Auburn University Educational Complex in Gulf Shores, Alabama, providing specialty veterinary services and educational opportunities for students interested in internal medicine and surgery, and is a satellite of the Auburn University Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the College of Veterinary Medicine .

This position will be responsible for providing support for dermatology, surgery, internal medicine, and patient care. The ideal candidate is flexible and enjoys working with multiple services. As a teaching institution, we excel at teaching advanced techniques, not only to vet students but our staff. This individual will help with endoscopies, ultrasounds, CTs, MRIs, anesthesia, surgery scrub, patient histories, client communication, filling medications, various diagnostic procedures as well as monitoring patients post-procedure. Scheduling can be flexible for the right individual.

Essential Functions

1. Assists with administering treatments and monitoring patients admitted in IMC or ICU, Observes and records vital data, abnormal signs, body weight, food/water intake of animals, and collects and labels specimens and perform treatments and administer medications as prescribed by primary veterinarian.
2. Performs and demonstrates veterinary care techniques and procedures related to emergency and critical care medicine.
3. Assists veterinarians in the care of patients requiring advanced procedures and life-saving techniques including CPR and mechanical ventilation.
4. Inspects facilities, equipment, and supplies daily, as well as observes health status of animals, environmental conditions, temperature, and sanitation.
5. Assists with emergency triage and stabilization of patients presenting through the Emergency service
6. May be responsible for, or assist in, billing clients, inputting charges, and/or similar tasks

Minimum Education and Experience

Veterinary Technology or a related field that qualifies an individual to obtain national certification.

Depending on the combination of education and experience, selected candidates will be assigned Levels I, II, or III . Salary range is determined by eligibility for Level I, II, or III .

Level II requires an Associate’s degree or higher in a technical or scientific field related to Veterinary Technology, 2 years of experience in Veterinary Technology or in the care and comfort of animals, and an active license as a Veterinary Technician, have met all requirements to become licensed, or have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ).

Level III requires an Associate’s degree or higher in a technical or scientific field related to Veterinary Technology, 4 years of experience in Veterinary Technology or in the care and comfort of animals, and an active license as a Veterinary Technician, have met all requirements to become licensed, or have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ).

Active license as a Veterinary Technician, have met all requirements to become licensed, or have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ). Veterinary Technician certification or license must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
