Position Summary

The Police Detective is an advanced police position on the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Campus serving over 10,500 students, and 1,200 employees. As a member of the UWL PD Command Staff, the Detectives work is performed under limited supervision of the Chief of Police and in consultation with the Police Sergeants. In addition, the Detective acts as the UWL Emergency Management Team Leader. This position exercises full statutory arrest authority and is responsible for the enforcement of State laws and administrative codes pertaining to the protection of life and property, and related protective services of the university community.

The Police Detective must have the ability to function independently and prepare, monitor, and present cases to the D.A., including the usage of (The traffic and Crash System) TraCS. The detective should have extensive knowledge of investigative methods, police procedure, evidence, court officer duties, and responsibilities. Additionally, they should have a working knowledge of instructor development/ training/adult learning process. The Police Detective teaches skill-based classes, conducts complete investigations including application for warrants, testifies in court, and must have knowledge and experience in the incident command system. This position’s normal work schedule is primarily first shift, Monday through Friday but the schedule is subject to change based on Department needs.

Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).

Required Qualifications
  • Must be a currently certified law enforcement officer in the State of Wisconsin.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a police officer.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license to allow operation in the State of Wisconsin. Authorization to drive a University vehicle is required.
  • The ability to perform the essential functions of a police officer.
  • The ability to use all standard law enforcement equipment (e.g. firearm and ammunition, radio/video/photography equipment, TASER Electronic Control Device, etc.).
  • Knowledge of evidence preservation techniques including photography and other standard evidence collection techniques.
  • Knowledge of emergency vehicle operation procedures and the ability to drive a vehicle in emergency mode.
  • Knowledge of the proper preparation of all reports, forms, and processing of arrested persons.
  • Knowledge of crowd management techniques.
  • Knowledge of appropriate state and federal statutes, laws, and administrative rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of investigation and arrest techniques.
  • The ability to observe and accurately recall facts or details about persons, events, accidents or crime scenes, physical conditions, and individuals’ behavior.
  • Effective written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Effective public relations techniques to communicate clearly and concisely, interact with, and be respectful of a diverse community of students, co-workers, faculty/staff, guests, and the general public.
  • The ability to maintain proficiency in technical aspects of law enforcement (e.g. CPR, first aid, AED, defensive tactics, firearms qualification, physical fitness, and emergency vehicle operation).
  • Ability to use a computer to perform data entry and retrieval (e.g. word processing, database, and internet) and law enforcement software
  • Knowledge of appropriate State statutes which regulate investigatory procedures.
  • Ability to coordinate investigations, obtain evidence and establish facts by interviewing, observing, and interrogating suspects, victims, or witnesses.
  • During critical incidents, the ability to operate within accepted incident command structures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the concept of community policing as well as problem-solving and how to interact within the operations of a police department.
  • Ability to operate independently and make sound decisions under stressful situations.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a technical and complicated environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 5 years of experience as a police officer is preferred.

  • The ability to react quickly and effectively to stressful situations.
Working conditions and environment

• Due to the nature of this position and the need for coverage for emergencies, scheduling, etc. the person selected for the position is required to establish (if not already) and maintain residency within one hour’s response time of the UW Police Headquarters. Response time may be measured by driving during the least congested time period and obeying all traffic regulations. This condition must be met within three months of starting employment with the UW-La Crosse Police Department. Exceptions to this condition may only be granted by the Chief of Police
• The ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays if necessary.
