The Child Development Lab (CDL) is a relationship-based program that requires its teachers to be able to build trusting and respectful relationships. This position will work collaboratively with other CDL staff, parents, college students, and researchers to support the research, teaching and outreach mission of the CDL in order to meet the social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs of all children in the program.

This position is responsible for mentoring and supervising college students placed in the classroom in addition to the regular duties of a lead classroom teacher. The teacher is responsible for providing a safe, nurturing and developmentally-appropriate environment for the children in the classroom. The teacher implements current best practices and provides input for potential program and classroom improvements. The teacher successfully applies all licensing and accreditation standards, including all related health and safety requirements.

This positions requires the following physical abilities:
Mobility: Ability to sit on floor and get up and down with ease; run, jump and climb hills and step stools; and reach overhead to retrieve items on shelves above shoulder level. Walk up and down stairs.

Strength: Ability to lift at least 35 pounds and ability to carry this weight across a classroom; engage in vigorous outdoor and large motor play for at least 30 minutes; and push/pull at least 3 children in stroller, wagon and evacuation crib. Move/push classroom furniture as needed.

Speed: Ability to perform physical tasks within a time frame commensurate with needs of fast-paced classroom. - Quick reaction time, (i.e., respond instantly to unexpected needs).

*This position also requires that the Teacher actively participate in outdoor activities with the children on a daily basis in all types of weather.

Responsibilities:

Prepares classroom lessons, facilitates classroom programs, and assesses student progress to ensure safety and foster an environment of learning and development in accordance with established curriculum. Interacts regularly with parents and trains new teachers and students.
  • 25% Plans and facilitates classroom programming and schedules daily classroom activities for an early childhood education facility according to established curriculums
  • 25% Maintains the safety and physical well-being of children in a designated classroom
  • 20% Evaluates individualized and developmental educational plans for children in collaboration with other stakeholders, as needed
  • 15% Maintains and documents effective communication with internal and external stakeholders to relay pertinent information and provide updates of child activities per established guidelines and regulations
  • 15% Mentors new teachers and students

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, social work or closely related field working with young children and their families.
4K teaching license preferred.

Qualifications:

The CDL is seeking candidates who have the following:
- Experience working with children under age 8.
- Experience with developmentally-appropriate ECE curriculum planning and assessment.
- Ability to identify and employ multiple strategies simultaneously in a complex work environment.
- Demonstrated commitment and ability to create an inclusive work environment.

Well qualified candidate will have:
- Experience working in a group, regulated childcare setting with groups of children 6 months to 3 years of age.
- Ability to mentor and supervise college students in the ECE setting.
- Two or more years of experience working within a team-teaching setting.
- Experience with play-based inquiry curriculum.
- Prior experience and or education working with young children with special needs.
- Ability to individualize care to meet the individual needs of young children, including those with special needs
- Ability to maintain regular, clear and respectful communication.
- Experience communicating with families about children's development and behavior.

Candidates must be able to pass a criminal background check including finger printing.

Additional Information:

A yearly Criminal Background Check and Caregiver Background Check and fingerprinting will be performed. A TB test and health examination is required not more than 12 months prior to or 30 days after the first day of employment. A CPR certificate (including training in infant and child CPR, and training in AED) must be on file within 6 months of the first day of work. Abusive Head Trauma Prevention training and training in Mandated Reporting of Child Abuse are required and can be provided by CDL staff during orientation.

The Child Development Lab (CDL) is a unique early care and education program for young children 0-5 years of age that also provides a teaching and research laboratory setting for University students, faculty and staff. The CDL is State-Licensed, City of Madison-accredited and Nationally-accredited by NECPA and is located in a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility on the beautiful UW-Madison campus. The CDL is licensed for 87 children and offers year-round programming. The CDL's tripartite mission is: (1) to provide UW students with carefully supervised training opportunities associated with their course of study; (2) to provide a population and a setting in which UW faculty and students can conduct research on issues related to child development, early learning and family studies; and (3) to engage in outreach activities, such as hosting professionals and scholars from around the world, serving on committees, providing continuing education to other teachers in the community and helping to organize community service projects. The Child Development Lab has provided excellence in early childhood education, research, and teacher training for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers since its inception in 1926. The CDL is the first preschool laboratory of its kind in Wisconsin, and it was the first laboratory school in the nation to receive accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in the 1980s. https://childdevelopmentlab.wisc.edu/
