POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Clinical Education Instructor and Clinical Field Liaison (CEI/CFL) position is a joint teaching and administrative support position. The CEI/CFL works as a member of the Clinical Academic Affairs team to ensure quality educational opportunities for Year 3 and Year 4 veterinary students at Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine (WesternU CVM). The CEI/CFL aids the Directors of Year 3 and Year 4 Curriculum in the delivery and assessment of student clinical training and assists the Director of Clinical Relations in oversight of external clinical sites. Administrative duties associated with Year 3 and 4 will account for approximately 50% of the position effort (0.5 FTE) and will include, but are not limited to, oversight of Year 4 selective rotations, facilitating communication with preceptors, and assistance with Year 3 clinical course scheduling and evaluation. The position duties are focused on the clinical education that occurs at clinical sites with preceptors utilized in Year 3 and Year 4 clinical curricula but may include some Year 1 and 2 educational facilities. About 30% of the position (0.3 FTE) will be dedicated to functions related to oversight of clinical sites such as documenting compliance with the College Safety and Facilities policies for Year 3 and Year 4 clinical educational facilities, preparing annual reports, and assisting with recruitment of new sites and preceptors. The remaining 20% (0.2 FTE) of time will be spent assisting with instruction in the Veterinary Basic and Medical Sciences for Year 1 and Year 2 and participating in essential College service functions.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Works with the Director of Year 4 Curriculum and assists that office with administrative responsibilities including but not limited to: (0.35 FTE)
a. Collaborating with the Director of Year 4 Curriculum and selective rotations instructors to oversee completion and grading of Year 4 selective and independent study rotations.
b. Monitoring student and preceptor evaluations and addressing concerns as needed.
c. Facilitating communication between WesternU CVM, preceptors, clinical sites and students when required.

2. Works with the Director of Year 3 Curriculum and assists that office with administrative responsibilities including but not limited to: (0.15 FTE)
a. Assisting with scheduling, schedule changes, and evaluation of Year 3 sessions.
b. Monitoring student and preceptor evaluations and addressing concerns as needed.
c. Facilitating communication between WesternU CVM, preceptors, clinical sites and students when required.

3. Serves as a facilitator for Veterinary Basic and Medical Sciences problem-based learning sessions and participating in clinical skills activities. (0.10 FTE)

4. Assists the Office of Clinical Relations with oversight of clinical sites including but not limited to: (0.30 FTE)
a. Performing and documenting site visits and safety and facility inspections to help ensure the clinical site provides a safe, positive, and effective learning environment.
b. Assisting with enforcing WesternU CVM policies and procedures for both students, clinical sites, and preceptors.
c. Administering preceptor training as directed and as needed.
d. Assisting with recruiting new clinical sites and preceptors when needed.
e. Assisting in preparing annual reports and other documents required for quality control and accreditation purposes.

5. Serves on College committees as assigned. (0.05 FTE)

6. Participates in college admissions file reviews and interviews. (0.05 FTE for 6, 7 & 8)

7. Represents the college at specified events as determined by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, such as White Coat and Graduation ceremonies.

8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Basic comfort and familiarity with veterinary clinical activities in hospital and ambulatory settings involving various animal species (including dogs, cats, horses, cows, birds, fish, and exotic animals) is required. The position requires skills and physical abilities to safely navigate through an active veterinary practice setting without disruption of activity inherent in these sites.

The position also requires the following skills and abilities:

1. Ability to communicate effectively with others, in writing and oral form, both in person and by alternate electronic means (e. g., email, videoconference, text, phone).
2. Ability to effectively interact with administration, faculty, staff, students and outside partners.
3. Ability to handle detail-oriented assignments with extensive follow-up and maintain confidentiality.
4. Organizational skills necessary in prioritizing workload and assuring efficiency in operation.
5. Proficiency with common computer software (word processing, spreadsheets, email, and virtual communication).
6. Ability to translate Cal/OSHA training into practical application at clinical sites.
7. Ability to travel by automobile, airplane, or other common conveyance to urban and rural locations.
8. Ability to promote professionalism and mutual respect consistent with our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) values within their daily activities and in their interactions with students, faculty, preceptors and staff

Qualification Standards

Education:
REQUIRED: An earned DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited University
PREFERRED:Safety training and certification, (e. g., 30-hour Cal/OSHA or OSHA certificate).

The employee may be required to walk on unlevel terrain and climb and/or be exposed to harsh weather conditions and to allergic environments such as dust, hay and animals.
