Department Summary

The mission of the EOP program is to provide access to higher education for historically low-income, underrepresented, disadvantaged students who have the potential to succeed at the university level. EOP recruits, retains and graduates students by providing a comprehensive program of support services which include admission, academic advisement, career and personal counseling, tutoring, financial assistance and graduate school information.


Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the assistant director of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), the incumbent serves as EOP Renaissance Scholars Program (RSP) Advisor. The RSP Advisor will assist with the delivery of the day-to-day support services provided to the Renaissance Scholars Program participants (this includes both current and former foster youth at CSUSB); including counseling, academic advising, general information regarding policies/procedures, grading system, course descriptions, etc. as mandated by 1996 Assembly Bill (AB 2463) and California Education Code 89340-89347.

Responsibilities include, but is not limited to:
  • Assists with EOP Renaissance Scholar admissions including reviewing RSP files, and makes admissions recommendations. Guides and oversees RSP applicants through the admissions process. Collects, reviews, interprets and maintains documentation that establishes students' foster your status. Assist in the collection, organization and reporting of Renaissance Scholars Program data along with any ad hoc reports requested by EOP Director or EOP Assistant Director. Tracks data required to meet grant proposal objectives.
  • Aids in the development and coordination of the Renaissance Scholar seminars, workshops, events, and cultural enrichment activities/field trips. Assists in coordinating Summer Bridge efforts for Renaissance Scholars. Participates in the student and assistant hiring process. Maintains current or former foster youth participants email distribution list on a regular basis and updates as needed. Contacts students via email, telephone, or in person regarding pertinent program events, updated program or campus policies, etc.
  • Develops co-curricular activities and programming for foster youth students that focuses on issues specifically related to the foster youth population including but not limited to dealing with transitions, fostering supportive connections, understanding financial aid, etc.
  • Assesses students for basic needs during academic year breaks (i.e. winter, spring, and summer breaks) where gaps in services may occur including limited access to campus dining services, risk of housing insecurity etc. and assesses students for assistance needed with academic needs including textbooks, graduate school application fees, etc. and coordinates assistance depending on availability of program funding resources.
  • Assist RSP participants in the selection of courses, majors, and prospective career opportunities. Assists students with other academic needs, such as graduation checks, completing grade forgiveness forms, petitions and withdrawals, developing semester or yearly academic plans. Provides career counseling and assists students in career exploration as it relates to course curriculum.
  • Assist students with academic concerns, such as academic progress, course failure, academic probation, and dismissal status. Individually contacts and follows up with students regarding concerning Mid-Semester evaluations.
  • Supports the Renaissance Scholars Program by obtaining student information needed to establish scholarship criteria, contacting potential scholarship applicants, developing/updating scholarship applications, processing scholarship applications and assists in coordinating any scholarship committees required to complete the scholarship awardee determination process.
  • Serve as back-up EOP counselor. Assist colleagues and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Disseminates resource information and directs students to fully utilize campus resources, such as the Office of the Registrar, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, Services to Students with Disabilities, Student Assistance in Learning, Career Center, Tutoring Center, Writing Center, Health Center, Housing and Residential Life, Library, etc. Works collaboratively with respective offices (i.e. Basic needs) to keep up to date on any changes on policy, procedure or services. Makes referrals, as needed, to other university student support services departments.
  • Directs students to fully utilize off-campus resources.
  • Collaborates with donors and community partners in the promotion of scholarships or in-kind offered to foster youth students.
  • Responsible for presenting and providing information to community groups and individuals about admissions and services available from EOP, the Renaissance Scholars Program and the university. Recruits current and former foster youth students to assist in increasing the number of foster youth students enrolled in the EOP Renaissance Scholars Program.
  • Collaborates with campus partners including the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, Admissions, Outreach & Recruitment, etc. to 1) identify prospective foster youth students on campus 2) reach out to foster students and inform them about the resources and services available to them as a foster youth student, and 3) maintain a contact list of foster youth students to allow for regular reach outs, communication and further provision of services and referrals.


Employment Status: Full time, exempt, temporary with the possibility of converting to permanent.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

  • General knowledge of individual counseling techniques.
  • General knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the overall operation, functions, programs, organizational procedures, and activities of the campus.
  • Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters.
  • Ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature.
  • Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
  • Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals to include faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, and other private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.
  • A background check (which may include: fingerprinting, checks of employment records, education records, criminal records, civil records, motor vehicle records, professional licenses, and sex offender registries, as position requires) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can begin employment with the CSU.

Education and Experience
  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • Experience: Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience.
    • A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
  • Class C Driver's License and Insurance

Preferred Qualifications
  • A Master's degree is desired. A Master's degree in School Counseling, Clinical Counseling or Educational Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field is preferred.
  • Upper division or graduate course work in individual and group counseling, career counseling and conflict resolution is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of and strict adherence to one of the nationally recognized counselor code of ethics, including the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), American Counseling Association (ACA), or the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), depending on their educational field, and the Core Values of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). Adaptability and aptitude for solution-oriented problem solving that promotes student success.
  • Demonstrated experience working with current or former foster youth.
  • Working knowledge or experience in relaying university degree requirements including major and general education coursework and developing educational plans.
  • Experience in grant writing, fundraising, and event planning is preferred as these are considered specialized skills. Knowledge in how to operate standard office equipment and software including PeopleSoft, Microsoft Office (Access, PowerPoint, Excel and Word) and database management.



Salary:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,691 per month

Classification Salary Range: $4,691 - $6,683 per month
