Job Description

The School of Education, Social Work and Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) announces a search for an adjunct instructor of PK-12 Educational Administration (leadership coach) in the Division of Educational Leadership, Policy and Foundations (ELPF), beginning Fall 2022. ELPF offers courses and degrees at the masters, specialist and doctoral levels. This is a non-tenure track, 12-month, non-benefits-eligible faculty appointment. The primary responsibilities for this position are designed to support UMKC PLUS (Pathway to Leadership in Urban Schools), an innovative principal leadership program.

UMKC PLUS prepares future principals who want to make a difference in the urban core of Kansas City. The program builds deep expertise through job-embedded training in the school environments where leaders are needed the most, offering the following components: (a) a focused Residency model, (b) personalized goals-based coaching, and (c) a cohort model. By concurrently earning a master’s degree or educational specialist degree in Educational Administration (PK-12 Emphasis), KC PLUS Residents meet all requirements for state certification as school building principals.

The individual selected for this position will join a collaborative and dedicated group of faculty and staff. The primary responsibilities are field-based, which will include the following: (a) provide professional development for aspiring school leaders; (b) coach aspiring school leaders enrolled in the KC PLUS program; (c) collaborate with schools and districts in the Kansas City metropolitan area, and (d) maintain communication with faculty and staff in ELPF. During the summer months (June through August), the successful candidate will coordinate and deliver an intensive Summer Institute for the KC PLUS program, as well as other duties associated with the program. This position requires that coaching and professional development duties take place during business hours.

As a public urban-serving research institution, UMKC is in the heart of Kansas City. The School of Education serves as a major institutional partner to school districts and community agencies across the metropolitan area. School of Education programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) at the initial-licensure level (2018-2025); advanced licensure programs will be submitted for review in 2025. Educator licensure programs are accredited at the state level by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Major Responsibilities:
Facilitate weekly goals-based coaching aligned to program priorities and differentiated for individual needs and contexts of assigned residents
Coordinate and deliver the intensive Summer Institute for the KC PLUS program
Design and provide group-based professional development for residents
Maintain positive relationships with PK-12 staff at schools associated with the UMKC Plus program
Maintain communication with ELPF faculty and staff on UMKC PLUS-related coaching and professional development issues
Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctorate in Educational Administration or closely related field, or a Master’s or Educational Specialist degree in Educational Administration and tested experience in educational administration, or a closely related field
  • Certified as a school administrator
  • Previous experience as a building principal
  • Previous experience or demonstrated potential for teaching adult learners in college/university settings
  • Demonstrated understanding of effective teaching and a deep commitment to effective and rigorous instruction
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Missouri Learning Standards and/or Common Core State Standards
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to social justice and urban issues
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students from culturally diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with others
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
