Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Director of Peer Assisted Learning (“Director of PAL”), the Learning Resource Specialist in the Center for Academic Success (“the Center”) will provide oversight and professional development of student employees, overall support for peer learning services (Peer Assisted Learning and the Writing & Media Lab), and academic coaching for the Center (Academic Success; Peer Assisted Learning; and the Writing & Media Lab).

Job Description:

Assists the PAL Director with the planning and implementation of training for student employees (also called “student consultants”) in both Peer Assisted Learning and the Writing & Media Lab. Relevant tasks and responsibilities could include assisting with: developing learning outcomes; creating or finding training materials; and leading or organizing professional development opportunities; and helping to develop and implement an internal performance review process for student consultants.

Provides academic coaching to all students, particularly those who need intensive support. Coaching consultations might include developing individualized learning plans, goal setting, strengthening executive functioning skills, and facilitating self-advocacy. Students may be referred through their use of the Peer Assisted Learning Program, the Writing & Media Lab, or by the Director of PAL or Director of Academic Success.

Assists with training peer consultants and provides consultation to faculty and staff on ways to support student learning.

Assists the PAL Director with oversight of the Peer Assisted Learning Program and the Writing & Media Lab. Representative responsibilities include ensuring students receive a high level of academic support through the Peer Assisted Learning Program.

Serves on campus committees as assigned.

Participates in Academic Affairs and Student Life programming in service of department and University goals.

Pursues professional development to keep pace with current trends in student academic support services, tutoring, and peer learning programs.

Completes performance review process with supervisors to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and University goals.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Peer Assisted Learning and the Director of Academic Success in support of the goals and objectives of the Center for Academic Success. Relationships

Frequent contacts with other professionals to plan, coordinate, problem-solve, present information, and suggestions related to mutual goals.
Responsibility for Final Decisions
Tasks involve interpretation of data and/or procedures to address problems or situations that are not clearly defined. Work involves non-routine/diverse work not defined by procedures.
Reports to Director of Peer Assisted Learning with additional reporting line to Director of Academic Success
Work is performed independently except where the interpretation of law, policy, rule, complex procedure, or request for exception is required.
Education/Skill Requirements
Bachelor's required. Master's preferred.

Experience in a higher education environment strongly preferred; and direct academic support or tutoring and/or teaching students also strongly preferred.

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to multitask and consistently meet deadlines while handling information confidentially.

Understanding of the importance of student learning outcomes and assessment preferred.
Work Conditions
Work is performed under usual office conditions.
