Summary/Objective

Working with the Dean, Associate Dean for Advancement & Alumni Relations, law school leadership, and Advancement colleagues, you will lead the Washington College of Law’s major gift initiatives, helping to develop and coordinate strategy and execution plans for major prospects, in line with WCL and American University vision and campaign initiatives. You will be responsible for managing the law school’s individual giving program, which includes the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospects with a rated capacity of $100,000 and greater and personally manage a portfolio of about 125 prospects; oversee a set of major gifts goals and metrics; and collaborate closely with internal and external colleagues. You will also be responsible for the oversight of advancement marketing materials that directly relate to the individual giving program.

Essential Functions
  1. Manage a major gifts portfolio of roughly 100-125 prospective donors managing all aspects of discovery, cultivation, strategy, solicitation and stewardship of prospects. Qualify interest and capacity of identified and tracked prospects in defined geographic areas. Identify new prospects based on research, referrals, giving history and work with AU central development office when needed.
  2. Complete all internal related administrative work on Washington College of Law’s prospect contact and tracking systems and work with the university’s CRM Advance system.
  3. Achieve annual goals relating to fundraising targets, solicitations, visits, cultivation referrals and any volunteer management as necessary.
  4. Work closely with the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations on campaign issues and organization and volunteer recruitment.
  5. Assistance with identifying and cultivating leadership for regional building committees, and for other volunteer opportunities at WCL such as admissions volunteers, advisory councils and boards, reunion volunteers, and career mentoring.
  6. Establish priorities, activity and revenue goals and develop relationships and programs to maximize gift revenue from alumni and friends of WCL to the building campaign.
  7. Oversee advancement marketing communications.

  • Potential for supervisory responsibility as the WCL Advancement team grows.
Work Environment
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours as required.
  • Ability to travel 12-15 times per year outside of the DMV region.

Required Education and Experience
  • Master's degree or equivalent.
  • 4-6, or more years of experience in higher education fundraising including an interest in the law.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience.
  • Team management experience desired.
  • Excellent knowledge of the principles of fundraising.
  • Ability to understand the objectives of the Washington College of Law and American University, and to integrate goals with those objectives.
  • Ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and alter strategic plans for prospect management.
  • Ability to articulate the case for support for the vision/mission/goals of Washington College of Law and the American University.
  • Strong interest in the law or public interest fields, all aspects of education, and a dedication to promoting the university's fundraising priorities through developing excellent working relationships with university constituencies.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Personal belief in mission, goals and objectives of private higher education and the Washington College of Law.
