Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Transition Programs is an organizational unit within the Division of Student Affairs, reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs. The Office of Transition Programs provides a comprehensive array of programs designed to meet the unique needs of undergraduate students and parents from orientation through graduation. Programs generate an intentional connection for the students through engaging interactions with other students, faculty and staff.

Some of the programs supported by the Office of Transition Programs are:
  • Freshman and Transfer Orientation
  • Fall and Spring Commencement
  • Convocation
  • Family and Alumni Weekend
  • Mentor Programs: Seahawk Links and the Teal Bridge
Services provided by Transition Programs:
  • Enrollment Management – Collaborating with Academic Affairs on best practices for program development related to transitioning and retaining students.
  • Program Development – Provide direction on the development of effective programs that impact persistence and retention of students.
  • Student and Leadership Development – Provide leadership experiences and learning opportunities through student trainings and employment.
  • Marketing – Developing materials, programs and publications that are relevant to new students and their families.
  • Resource Management – Provide direction on the efficient and effective use of resources through evaluation and assessment of student and user fees.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

This Assistant Director of First Generation and Foster Care position is responsible for creating programs and supporting students who have aged out of the foster care system and/or have been emancipated from parents.

This position will also develop programs, services and interventions to assist with university retention efforts.

Assists in the development of programs, services and education to assist with students aging out of foster care, wards of the state or may be emancipated from their parents; implements programs that facilitate achievement of goals and objectives and which conform to all policies; links students to myriad assistive resources; assists with the analysis of needs and directions for improvements based upon institutional trends and data related to specific populations; monitors progress of program implementation, evaluates result, and recommends changes and improvements; ensures adherence to budget and other administrative requirements to meet the objectives of the program; as requested, prepares grant applications to help resource the program; coordinates the activities of special task forces, work groups and committees designed to assist UNCW’s Special Populations; identifies staff development training needs and provides training; creates and coordinates educational in-services on special populations for student affairs staff and other university personnel; develops survey instruments to gather information on the needs of UNCW’S special populations and mines research data and national best practices on college Special Populations to inform and improve our model; updates the content of educational programs to ensure that training, equipment and processes are technologically current; interacts with various related committees and work groups in order to support students (such as student success /student experience/high impact practices groups; Student Behavioral Intervention Team, Athletics.

The Assistant Director will serve as a liaison between university and community partners to aid in and create pathways for students success. The Assistant Director for First Generation and Foster Care reports directly to the Director of Transition Programs and will be expected to be a collaborative partner in the development of educational programs which support the academic mission.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience
  • Master’s Degree in higher education administration/leadership, student personnel, or related fields
  • At least two years of related experience
  • Demonstrated examples of creating programs and services to assist college special populations
  • Clear Understanding of how to assess student populations and derive results that inform contemporary resources and programs to assist students
  • Understanding of student development concepts and theories specific to individual special populations
  • Ability to multi-task in order to move the needle on assisting multiple student populations simultaneously
