Academic Advisor for College of Education



Position Announcement

Advise students interested in pursuing undergraduate degrees in the College of Education (specifically Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences, which includes programs in Integrated Studies and Individualized Studies), as well as fulfilling general education requirements. Assist students in both pre-requisites as well as major, minor and/or degree of study requirements. This position will be supervised by the Dean of the College and the Director of College Advisement on student success initiatives, academic planning, etc. Information about the college can be found online at https://colleges.utahtech.edu/education/ .

Responsibilities
  • Advise students in department programs, general education, transfer and graduation requirements.
  • Work with both Integrated Studies and Individualized Studies program faculty and Academic Advisement Center to assist students with applications for graduation, process financial aid audits, conduct and prepare degree audit contracts in preparation for graduation, etc.
  • Work with Individualized Studies Coordinator to track and meet with students who have declared Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences as their major.
  • Cross-train with other College of Education advisors to ensure general understanding about all programs offered within the College.
  • Maintain regular office hours and attend faculty and department meetings.
  • Represent College of Education and Academic Advisement in Utah Tech promotional and freshman events, including freshman orientation.
  • Refer students to other agencies for assistance, such as Financial Aid, Disability Resource Center, TRiO Program, Health & Wellness Center, Community Outreach programs, etc.
  • Participate in retention initiatives under direction of College of Education and Academic Advisement.
  • Attend professional development opportunities for advisement.
  • Assist with the commencement and convocation programs.
  • Serve on various university committees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of the College and Director of College Advisement.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Two years of advising or related experience required; experience advising undergraduates in interdisciplinary programs preferred.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices in student guidance and counseling.
  • Familiarity with college admissions guidelines, standards, and procedures, and higher education admissions advising in general.
  • Familiarity with various financial aid programs, including application deadlines and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise critical human relations skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with students, employees and the public.
  • Competence with institutional computer programs and technology.
Supplemental Information

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time professional staff (overtime-exempt) position. Annual salary of $40,000 for Bachelor’s degree-qualified applicants and $43,000 for Master’s degree-qualified applicants. Desired start date of August 2022.
