POSITION SUMMARYUnder the general direction of the Director of Student Housing and Residential Life, the Assistant Director for Learning and Assessment (ADLA) is responsible for the development and oversight of the residential learning efforts, including residential curriculum, living-learning communities (LLC) and other academic initiatives, and departmental assessment. Student Housing and Residential Life (SHRL) recognizes the importance of learning both in and out of the classroom. SHRL supports the concept of education within our residence halls and apartments for individuals and within a community.A principal pedagogical objective of this position, inherent in its focus on residential learning, is to expand the academic experience beyond the walls of the classroom and foster out of class interaction between students, staff, and faculty members so that learning takes place where students live and is viewed as an essential part of the residential experience. Working collaboratively with university colleagues, the ADLA supports the establishment of intended learning outcomes and assessment instruments to support and evaluate the efficacy of the residential experience. The ADLA leads initiatives to support students in their classroom endeavors by bringing academic support services to where students live. Our LLCs and themed communities aspire to broaden the vision of our residential students by expanding what it means to be a learner at CSUMB. The ADLA is responsible for the management of on-campus Living-Learning Communities including academic-based learning communities that link classroom learning with on-campus living through faculty involvement, advising and academic support, thematic communities and the formation of new communities within the residence halls. The ADLA collaborates with campus partners both in Student Affairs and Academic Affairs to build sustainable communities that contribute to the educational learning and growth goals of each student.As a member of the SHRL team, the ADLA develops and implements policies and procedures, and provides a presence in SHRL that support the University's mission regarding creation of a learning experience and the development and implementation of integrated learning environments and programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include. but are not limited to. the following:Residential Learning:This position oversees the development of learning-centered residential strategies that include, but are not limited to residential curriculum, living-learning communities, and digital asynchronous educational content.
  • Develops goals and strategies that promote a positive atmosphere in the residential community that is conducive to student academic and developmental success.
  • Development of a multicultural community through assisting students in establishing a genuine respect for, and appreciation of personal differences; and an environment that encourages students to grow intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically, interpersonally, and ethically toward personal autonomy and interdependence.
  • In collaboration with SHRL senior leadership, faculty, and student affairs colleagues, develops a residential curriculum model that supports learning where students live in conjunction with academic and social development.
  • Structures outcomes, identifies significant programs, and develops assessment tools that interface the academic and out of classroom experience.
  • Seeks input through the development of an interdisciplinary working group for the residential curriculum.
  • Presents the residential curriculum to current and prospective campus partners to increase collaboration in a manner suited to progressing the residential curriculum.
  • Represents SHRL on the development and steering of co-curricular outcomes for the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Coordinates the development and implementation of established and new LLCs, including, but not limited to faculty coordination and orientation program integration. Works to assist current LLCs and identify goals for continued progress and success.
  • Facilitates the LLC planning committee.
  • Serves as the primary staff liaison to all faculty and campus partners working with LLCs and academic programs.
  • Works with the Coordinator of Occupancy Management to ensure space availability and appropriate room selection processes for all LLCs.
  • Works collaboratively with the Associate Director of Residential Life, or designee, to support RLCs managing LLCs. Provides guidance and support to ensure LLCs are implemented in alignment with SHRL mission and goals, including, but not limited to process administration, LLC budget allocation, and policies and procedures relating to all LLCs. Creates and coordinates annual revisions to the Living-Learning Community Manual.
  • In coordination with the Coordinator of Communication and Outreach, develops, implements, revises and continuously improves ongoing outreach and student recruitment efforts for LLCs.



Academic Initiatives:Oversees the development of holistic support services in residential communities to bridge the curricular and co-curricular lives of students.
  • Creates relationships with the Cooperative Learning Center (CLC), Academic Advising, Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC), International Programs (IP), and other campus resources, as appropriate, to bring tutoring, writing, advising, counseling, and research services into student housing communities.
  • In collaboration with senior leadership within SHRL, develops satellite locations where services are brought to students in their residential communities to transform learning potential for all residential students with particular focus toward Latinx servingness, Black, Pell-eligible, and first generation students.
  • Showcases academic advisors by having presence around drop and add dates, and also include other campus partners as appropriate.
  • Works with faculty, departments and the First Year Seminar registrar's office to set course pairings for the academic year
  • Oversees annual residential academic recognition program, including, but not limited to semesterly academic recognition letters, participation in the annual Outstanding Otters and the Residential Life Communities of Academic Achievement event, and other celebrative efforts to recognize the academic achievements of residential students.
  • Coordinates First Year Seminar class acquisition with the FYS office.

Assessment and Program Review:Coordinate a comprehensive assessment model for the student housing program, including but not limited to annual program satisfaction and learning assessment, individual program evaluations, and monthly and annual assessment and reporting.
  • Coordinates, administers, interprets, and reports on departmental assessment efforts, including the collection, organization, and cataloging of department data and outcomes.
  • Identifies and communicates program and department needs by connecting trends and patterns across all department data sets.
  • Works with the Director of SHRL to implement the department monthly reporting model, including routine analysis and storytelling.
  • Collaborates with Coordinator of Communication and Outreach to leverage data analyses and outcomes in routine internal and external communications.
  • Develops and implements ongoing assessment, including fall and spring program evaluation and annual reports for all academic initiatives and LLCs. Makes ongoing adjustments as necessary to facilitate program success.

Leadership and Supervision:Provide leadership within SHRL to promote and facilitate a learning-centered organizational culture. Contribute to organizational decision-making by translating the academic mission and priorities into the daily work of SHRL.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises 1-5 undergraduate and/or graduate student assistants as needed to support position functions.
  • Provides frameworks and processes to 25 professional and 72 Resident Advisor staff to guide their daily efforts regarding the Residence Experience Plan, living-learning communities, assessment, etc. Trains other staff members in the use of developed processes and systems.
  • Serves on the SHRL Leadership Team.
  • Assists in coordination of department strategic planning activities.
  • Responds to questions and concerns raised by parents and family members of residents and provides referrals to appropriate university and/or community resources.
  • May coordinate or assist with planning and facilitation of various staff training workshops for both professional and paraprofessional staff.
  • Collaborates with Assistant Director of Residential Life for Training and Development to recruit, select, and train Resident Advisors for the LLCs. Offers ongoing support as needed.
  • Assists in the communication efforts for academic and LLC partners who coordinate early arrival/summer conference groups such as: UROC, TRiO, and EOSP.
  • Collaborates with SHRL senior leadership in their work with campus partners to advance learning opportunities and strategies.
  • Represents SHRL on University-wide committees to leverage opportunities for promoting learning-centered residential experiences, such as the Orientation Advisory Board, Academic Senate, and the Student Affairs and Academic Success Committee.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Successful candidates will possess: a working knowledge of practice, procedure, management, and activities of a Student Housing and Residential Life program. This candidate will have substantial understanding of student development theory, group dynamics, and current issues and trends in higher education; staff development, leadership development, multicultural issues. This candidate must have the ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; ability to initiate and use resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range living-learning community improvements; ability to obtain factual and interpretive information through qualitative and quantitative research; ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make written or verbal presentations; ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters and complex matters; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, and others in committee work. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.

Ability to work collaboratively, build consensus, and obtain buy-in from multiple stakeholders. Ability and skill to supervise the work of multiple direct reports and effectively recommend personnel actions; strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills; train and evaluate the productivity and performance of employees; and analyze situations and take corrective action. Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:A Bachelor’s Degree in Student Personnel, Student Affairs, or a related field including experience with living-learning communities, academic initiatives, and/or assessment AND at minimum two years of progressively responsible post-graduate professional student services work experience managing and coordinating a Student Housing and Residential Life program experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above. Advanced degree may substitute for 2 years of the required experience.

Additional experience as live-in staff highly desirable; demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience; ability to develop cooperative relationships with other university departments; experience advising student groups; demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence; experience working with a multicultural population; familiarity performing community service learning; and demonstrated technical literacy.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources. Classification: Grade 6, Management. The annual hiring range for this position is $62,400-$65,000.

This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
